METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study of 446 hospitalized elderly was performed randomly, their nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). For the analysis, the descriptive statistics and measures of central tendency were used, the statistical association was measured with the OR, the confidence interval was 95%, and it was considered statistically significant at p <0.05. RESULTS: The prevalence of malnutrition was 32.06% (CI 28-36), increasing by over 75 years of age with an OR 1.86 (CI: 1.24 - 2.81 p value <0.003), observed as a risk factor not using prosthesis dental OR 1.86 (CI: 1.12 - 2.51 p value <0.012) and difficulty feeding OR 3.44 (CI: 2.19 - 5.42 p value <0.000). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of malnutrition in older adults was 32.06% and it is associated with the not using of dental prosthesis and feeding difficulty as a risk factor. (Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2016-09) Chimbo Yunga, Jenny Maritza; Chuchuca Cajamarca, Angela Jimena; Encalada Torres, Lorena Esperanza; Wong, Sara
INTRODUCTION: Globally there is a demographic transition and the elderly population by 2050 will increase from 10% to 22%, in Ecuador in 2010 elderly people represented 7% and by 2050 will increase to 18%. Population aging leads to increased rates of chronic degenerative disease primarily associated with an insufficient level of physical activity increase the risk of death of 20% to 30%. There is evidence that moderate-vigorous physical activity levels reported health benefits. OBJECTIVE: To determine the level of physical activity through the IPAQ (short version) in adults older from urban parishes in Cuenca, 2015. METHODOLOGY: It is a descriptive study of 387 older adults in whom the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) in its short version was applied by interview, after fulfilling the inclusion criteria: men and women with 65 years old and older who wish to participate and sign the informed consent. The data were analyzed and processed in SPSS version 15, using frequency distribution, measures of central tendency (mean) and dispersion (standard deviation). RESULTS: A total of 387 older adults were studied, the 64.6% were between 65-74 years, the average age stood at 72.77 years with a standard deviation of ± 7.47 years, were the 63.6% were female, the 55.8% were married , the 53.4% finished primary school, and the 70.5% was not active in work. The 45% of older adults had a high level of physical activity, 37% moderate and 18% low. Physical activity levels varied with age, marital status, education level and occupation. CONCLUSIONS: The older adults in Cuenca have a high level of physical activity, which may vary by certain socio- demographic characteristics

(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2016-09) Sempértegui Cárdenas, Pablo Xavier; Castro Calle, Fernando Eugenio
OBJECTIVE: To determine the validity of a scale prediction of intracranial lesions to brain-cranial trauma in children aged from 0 to 5 years in pediatric emergency in The Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital, 2014. METHODOLOGY: A validation study with a diagnostic test was performed, the sample was calculated with the sample restrictions: sensitivity 80%, specificity 80%, alpha: 5% expected prevalence: 10%, and 7% losses being 409. All children aged from 0 to 5 years with cranial trauma with a representative who agreed to participate by informed consent were included, the abandonment of service and inability to perform CAT skull were excluded. The validated scale ICPS was designed by the author and subjected to validation of theoretical construct. In all cases the scale was filled and CAT was performed as “gold standard” for identifying intracranial lesions analyzed blindly. The information was processed in SPSS and was obtained: sensitivity, specificity, PV +, PV, RL + and RL. RESULTS: A total of 41 patients had intracranial lesions (10%), the most frequent lesion was cerebral edema (56%). The most sensitive parameter was: drop height (95.1%), the highest specificity: the presence of> 2 seizures (100%). A total score of 4 or more obtained the best sensitivity combined with better specificity (97.6% and 78.26%). The UCA for that score was 0.908. CONCLUSIONS: The EPLIC scale is valid for predicting intracranial lesions and therefore it can be a useful tool for handling CBT under 5 years

(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2016-09) Morales Sanmartín, Jaime Rodrigo
OBJECTIVE: To determine the level and characteristics of the scientific production in the Medical Sciences Faculty of the University of Cuenca, in the period 2009-2014. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical research was conducted. The sample, which was, random and representative, was consisted by 460 research papers, 272 graduate, 98 post graduate and 100 of the Faculty of Medical Sciences Magazine. The data were obtained from the digital files of the Library. The characteristics were studied in academic levels of graduate, postgraduate and teacher. Significant differences were established using the chi square and a value of p <0.005. RESULTS: A total of 996 research papers were produced at a rate of 166 jobs per year, predominated the biomedical research (74.6%), clinical (73%), observational (88.5%), quantitative (89.3%), descriptive (65.7%) applied (96.7%) and it was performed more in hospitals (42.4%); in the graduate and in the magazine there is more co-authored, in the postgraduate the authorship is individual; according to the production of the magazine, which published most professors of the Faculty, is low compared to the magnitude of graduate and postgraduate; the tendency is to increase the number of research papers; existing a low international (4.1%) and inter-institutional (8.5%) collaboration. CONCLUSIONS: The research is limited, but with a tendency to increase, it is mainly observational, quantitative, descriptive, biomedical, and clinical, which is done with very little international and inter-institutional collaboration.
