Publication Incorporación de la evaluación de la sostenibilidad en el diagnóstico del sistema de asentamientos poblacionales(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-10-18) Salazar, XimenaNew readings of the territory as well as the existing legal context raises the need for tools that support the development of Development and territorial cantonal ordering plans. In this sense, there is a methodological proposal that orient the elaboration of diagnosis of component "human settlements" and that enables the knowledge of their current situation under a sustainability approach. The scheme followed to raise the proposal seeks, on the one hand, to maintain a technical and substantiated stringency, and on the other hand, identify those particularities of the territory under study to effectively demonstrate that the use of theoretical models does not have immediate applicability.Publication Presentación(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-10-18) Salazar, XimenaThe conviction that it is necessary to continue strengthening a space within the Faculty where teachers and students can write about architecture, the city, territory, and heritage has led Revista ESTOA No. 3 to present articles on these topics, with the aim of inviting debate and reflection.Publication Lógica clásica y lógica difusa: facetas que las caracterizan(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-02-19) Almache Cabrera, JuanAnalysis of bibliographic information, such as methodological process for this article, led to the elaboration of matrices corresponding to each of the facets: logical, relational, epistemic and sets, from classic and diffuse logics. The interrelationship and analysis of different premises constants in these arrays allowed the diversification in the conception of each of them, whereas the classical logic as a science of the formal and regulatory principles of reasoning, which focuses on the logical form of adopting the thoughts to the construction of formal languages with clarity and precision, and diffuse logic as the science of the formal principles of approximate reasoning, flexible and tolerant of imprecision, capable of modeling non-linear problems. In addition, applications of diffuse logic are briefly manifested, among others: control systems and neural networks.Publication Lo complementario en la realidad(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-02-19) Luna, VerónicaThe built space has evolved and those who occupy this space have not maintained the pace of this evolution. It is necessary to create new organs to extend our senses and our body to new dimensions still unimaginable and maybe impossible, it is necessary to re-signified the reality. Art and architecture may be the last resort of freedom that we have for the reflection of what actually happens with the already built and about the place that we are leaving to our children. The imagined city, the territories, the imaginary and the symbolic.Publication Territorio, Ciudad y Arquitectura(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-02-19)What is written in an academic space, in this case, the Faculty of Architecture, becomes what is thought and what is intended; in the reflections and their potential applications regarding topics related to territory, city, and architecture. ESTOA Journal No. 2 features several articles related to these two significant tasks.Publication Los vehículos motorizados privados y el problema de transporte público en los centros históricos: el caso de Cuenca-Ecuador(Universidad de Cuenca, 2012-06-18) Moscoso Cordero, María SoledadTransport, pedestrianization and conservation are three main problems in the management of heritage cities, especially in the Latin American cities, where economic resources limit their access to sustainable transport systems. After having an overview of the problem and its causes, have been investigated solutions as well as the implementation of appropriate policies, related to the subject, in the historical centres. Likewise, we have analyzed successful cases of traffic management systems developed in cities of the world heritage in order to find solutions transferable and that they can be adapted to the context of Cuenca, one of the two cities patrimony of the humanity of the Ecuador.Publication Hacia una ciudad compacta: Cuenca y sus áreas residenciales(Universidad de Cuenca, 2012-06-18) Mera, María Augusta; Santacruz, María ElizabethResidential settlements in the city of Cuenca have been forming at the same time as urban interventions carried out with the intention of planning a growth of the city, or by events that have passed over time. At present, the city has a model of settlement in which corresponds to the uses of soil underlying after the "Ordinance that punishes the Territorial ordering Plan of the Cuenca canton: determinations for the use and occupation of urban soil" issued by the municipality of Cuenca in 1998 and renovated in 2003. This model has allowed the population with facilities services, communication and an environment suitable for the development of activities of daily living; However, after a decade of their validity, is believed relevant to evaluate and adjust this model with the intention of encourage towards a compact settlement. This research has been focused on those resources that allow to improve the existing conditions in current soil use model, at the same time that has raised a series of strategies and recommendations to advance toward a compact city.Publication Un nuevo modelo territorial de las zonas de protección natural periurbanas en la microcuenca del río Tarqui(Universidad de Cuenca, 2012-06-18) Orellana, Diana AlejandraThe Ordinance that punishes the Territorial ordering Plan of canton Cuenca, existing since 2003, determines the non-developable land in the area of influence close to the city because some factors, one of them is the natural value possessing five well-defined areas called Areas of Natural Protection (ZPN), in these areas is restricted all activity involving the artificialization of land, banning also their fractionation. However, so far are vulnerable by urban growth because there is no any plan that defines their management. Under that circumstance, we applied the methodology proposed by Dr. Domingo Gómez Orea to the elaboration of the Territorial ordering Plan used in three of the five ZPN peri-urban areas: Loma de Huizhil, Cerro Monjas, Agua Santa and the area of close influence - the micro-watershed of the Tarqui river- common to the three territories, the same that is characterized by harmonize activities and human aspirations with the reception capacity of each territory.Publication Unidades estructurales y su importancia en la ordenación del territorio ecuatoriano(Universidad de Cuenca, 2012-06-18) Pauta Calle, FernandoThe objective of this study is to show the conceptual and methodological utility that has the definition of "structural units" in the determination of the reception capacity of the physical environment for human activities, in the framework of the drafting of the territorial organization plans. For this purpose, in the introduction is located as a starting point one of the methodologies proposed by Professor Domingo Gómez Orea and the restrictions presented for that purpose from a more systematic approach. Town and country planning is defined as a context, the methodological process are set out for the elaboration of a land management plan and in particular for the establishment of the capacity of the physical environment and as part of this component, the aforementioned structural units, but also the "environmental units", highlighting the advantages that has in principle to find the latter, following the method of Gómez Orea. Then the structural units are conceptualized and explained how can be defined at different levels of detail. Is then exposed the environmental function of structural units and their difference with the environmental and also its socio-economic function. Finally shown its definition with a specific application. The main result points to the discernment of the reception capacity of the physical environment for human activities becomes more appropriate, rigorous and consequent with its features if it relies on structural units, without prejudice to the subsequent definition, with intentions of analysis and diagnosis of the environmental unit suggested by Gómez Orea in attention to activities that support eventually that medium.Publication Entendiendo la arquitectura sostenible como un ente generado esencialmente a partir de su entorno(Universidad de Cuenca, 2012-06-18) Galindo, TomásThis article suggests an approach sui generis to the conception of sustainable architecture preliminary project, where the response provided by the architecture to the problem set is defined exclusively from the tangible results that provides analysis of a series of specific factors, determined by the environment or architectural context, as well as by the implicit functional parameters within the subject of project. Obviously, should be noted that the subject of this article is reflected in its contents through a description and personal appreciation of its author on the method noticeable from the reading of the thesis paper: "Scientific research center for tourism & Museum of Meteorology in San Cristóbal Island, Galapagos province", document cited in the bibliography of this article.Publication Revisión de la industrialización de la vivienda y de tres experiencias de sistemas constructivos en Latinoamérica(Universidad de Cuenca, 2012-06-18) Samaniego Sánchez, Augusto PatricioThis article tries to present, in a synthesized way, a set of variables obtained from an inventory of 123 construction industrialized techniques, prepared by a group of American researchers, listed in the First catalog of industrialized techniques for the low-cost housing in Latin America and the Caribbean with the coordination of the architect Walter Kruk. The variables refer to the extent of the use of industrialized techniques, the kind of techniques, materials, periods of development, the intensity of the investment and the type of labor; which, in general, allow to identify the characteristics of the construction companies that have opted for the path of industrialization. This part concludes with a description of the technological profile of a Latin American company. Finally, to illustrate the main features of the building systems that use industrialized techniques in Latin America it concludes with a brief review of three successful and innovative experiences for low cost housing as the sytems BENO in Argentina, SANDINO in Cuba and SANCOCHO in Venezuela.Publication Memoria: Proyecto de ampliación y readecuación de la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad de Cuenca Edificio de Postgrado(Universidad de Cuenca, 2012-06-18) Ramos Monori, LeonardoThe new circumstances of the institutional academic politic, the overcoming of the lack of provision of number of classrooms to meet the current needs, streamline assignments and schedules, and the larger envelope of cubicles to research purposes and works related to teaching for a greater number of professors, encourage the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Cuenca in 2007 to propose the extension of its infrastructure. This article has been prepared based on the technical report submitted and resulting winner in the contest. It shows the designer’s intention and the considerations that prompted both for the construction of the new building, as some of the retrofits in existing buildings which were integrated to the proposal.Publication Pensar y escribir sobre arquitectura, ciudad, territorio y patrimonio(Universidad de Cuenca, 2012-06-18) Jaramillo Medina, CarlosPublication Presentation(Universidad de Cuenca, 2026-06-18) Pauta Calle, FernandoPublication Del supermodernismo a la neotradicionalidad: la búsqueda contemporánea de la identidad arquitectónica latinoamericana(Universidad de Cuenca, 2026-01-26) Arnet Callealta, VirginiaThe purpose of this article is to demonstrate that there is a Latin American condition of contemporary architecture. Therefore, it focuses on the detailed analysis of the epistemological scope of Latin America to subsequently define the essential aspects and arguments in its territory and its architecture. Furthermore, the methodological approach allows establishing identity parameters such as the landscape in Chile, tropicalism in Brazil, the mix of cultures in Mexico, the material in Colombia or the brick in Argentina and Paraguay, which contributes to the determination of Latin American architecture from the global perspective. Finally, the discussions and reflections at the end of the process confirm the relevant role of the development of local identities within the complex global panorama thanks to the understanding of a common Latin American condition.Publication Práctica y cientificidad en la producción contemporánea aplicada al arte, la arquitectura y el diseño(Universidad de Cuenca, 2026-01-26) Martínez Osorio, Pedro; Guerrero Torrenegra, Alejandro; Castellanos Tuirán, AlexandraA reflection is proposed around the most representative aspects of the debate on scientific production in arts, architecture and design, towards the discussion for its legitimacy and demystification of the barriers about what is or is not valid in the production of scientific knowledge. Based on a bibliographic review, the favorable scenarios that allow the validation of all forms of knowledge are described as a contribution to the understanding and reflection of contemporary problems. The overview of research directed by project practice and aspects related to subjectivity and scientificity in creative disciplines is presented. The dynamic context of the contemporary world demands from different disciplines a greater concern for analyzing their methodologies and forms of knowledge production. The design disciplines, due to their great creative load, require a greater commitment to new ways of approaching knowledge towards innovation.Publication Lo local y lo universal en el arte ecuatoriano aplicado al aprendizaje enseñanza de la arquitectura(Universidad de Cuenca, 2026-01-26) Benavides Alvarez, Javier; Revelo Morales, NatalyThe relationship between the local and the universal in creative processes is examined, using the methodology of Architectural and Urban Design I Workshop from the Architecture program at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) during 2022. The study analyzes how students can integrate local traditions with universal principles through mimesis and abstraction, referencing two comparative cases: one Ecuadorian and one international. The methodology aims to ¨ not only theoretically, but also through a practical process that transforms real objects into abstract forms. This approach facilitates the understanding of universal patterns present in various cultural and artistic expressions, allowing their adaptation to the architectural context.Publication La enseñanza de la arquitectura como un proceso constructivista desde el método para el diseño(Universidad de Cuenca, 2026-01-26) Silveyra Rosales, Mariana TeresaThis study analyzes how architecture students at UAEM apply the design method throughout their academic development, focusing on key process phases, core concepts, feedback, and design approaches. It examines their perception of the process and how the 2019 curriculum introduces elements that complicate its application. Using a qualitative approach, the research includes workshop observations, interviews, and student-created infographics. Findings highlight the importance of linking theory and practice from a constructivist perspective to avoid fragmented learning. Challenges identified include information overload without adequate guidance and difficulty building knowledge autonomously. When design studios lack a clear constructivist approach, students tend to replicate existing styles rather than develop their own creative processes. The study underscores the need to rethink architectural design education in order to strengthen critical thinking and foster greater autonomy in future architects.Publication Acerca de arquitectas argentinas, de concursos y su representación en la prensa (1947-1967)(Universidad de Cuenca, 2026-01-26) Méndez, PatriciaFrom a gender perspective, this documentary study systematically analyzes the participation of women architects in architectural design competitions convened by the Central Society of Architects (SCA) between 1947 and 1967. Using a documentary methodology, the official records of the professional association were reviewed and compared with journalistic coverage by the newspaper La Prensa during that period. It was possible to identify awards, as well as paradigmatic cases of their protagonists. The results revealed and made visible nearly two hundred awards won by women in architecture, but also highlighted the limitations of the gender bias imposed by both the official entity and the editorial practices of the time. By restoring the full names of the winners and acknowledging their participation in official disciplinary competitions, this research contributes to the construction of a more equitable architectural historiography and collaborates with the expansion of recognition of women’s contributions to 20th-century architecture.Publication Variaciones en normatividad de suelo comunero y expansión urbana. Caso: laderas periurbanas de Quillahuata, Cusco-Perú(Universidad de Cuenca, 2026-01-26) Sarkar, Sanghamitra; Nag, SanjibThe transformation of commercial centres is a common feature of current urban development processes, where modern typologies of commercial centres are generated alongside traditional markets, disrupting the urban fabric of Indian cities. This disruption has led to lifestyle changes and altered the character of public places. The existing literature has not adequately explored this issue from an urban design perspective for Indian cities. To predict the future direction of transformation, a holistic study of this phenomenon is imperative. This paper aims to theoretically identify the relevant parameters, sub-parameters and variables that influence this phenomenon in the Indian context. Furthermore, it seeks to establish a theoretical framework based on their inter-relationship for examining similar transformations in contemporary urban development processes.
