A Data-Based Mechanistic (DBM) model and the Nedbor-Afstromnings Model (NAM) were applied to simulate the rainfall-runoff relationship of two Andean basins, different in size, located in southern Ecuador. This article provides a comparative analysis of both modeling approaches, with emphasis on the evaluation of the model performance. The study revealed that the DBM model better mimics the rainfall-runoff system than the NAM model representing the river basin by a structure composed of three linear reservoirs.

Adobe walls are common construction elements in the heritage buildings in the historic center of the City of Cuenca. Most of these buildings were constructed in the Republican period, especially in the period 1860-1940. Threats from natural and human origin resulted over time in a degradation of the heritage buildings. An important guide for the conservation is having a clear and accurate picture of the degraded status and condition of the adobe walls. To this end a damage registration system characterizing the current constructive state of the adobe walls in the City of Cuenca was developed. Surveys of the condition of adobe walls resulted in the derivation of measurable indicators and their respective variables, describing in a qualitative and quantitative way the constructive condition of the walls. A matrix based system for the prioritization and weighing of the variables was developed. Applying multivariate analysis resulted in the derivation of a global status indicator of the adobe wall. This indicator not only reflects the urgency of intervention, but also the type of constructional intervention or monitoring action required for the conservation of the wall.

In this paper it is demonstrated that the power (p + q) of a natural number (n), can be derived as the sum of a series of consecutive odd numbers. The series of the summation is conditioned by a lower and upper boundary, being equal to half the difference plus 1, and respectively half the sum of the powers p and q of the natural number. The algorithm, notwithstanding its simplicity, offers some interesting opportunities in the applications of number theory to numerical analysis.

The paper presents the results of a qualitative observational study mapping the emotional responses of a focus group of 8 persons with children with Down Syndrome. The respondents also completed a semi-structured questionnaire. The children of the focus group all belong to the DS daycare centre of the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The group interview and questionnaire addressed respectively the crossculturally stigma and discrimination versus persons with DS, the parent’s feelings, the impact on the whole family, and the communication with the health care sector. The study revealed that in Cuenca city the negative attitude regarding DS persons still persists. Additionally, the survey shed light on the responses and adaption of parents and families. Last but not least it is recognized that improved communication with health care personnel, knowledgeable of the emotional attitude of parents and family functioning, will be beneficial for the acceptance and care-taking of DS persons. Findings leads to the necessity of developing counseling programs for children with DS and their families, and underscores the vital need to increase community awareness and social support.

Estudio observacional descriptivo transversal
(2013) Astudillo Durán, Silvana Vanessa; Carpio Guerrero, Ximena Catalina; Cordero Méndez, Fabián Patricio; Pozo Rodríguez, Santiago Estuardo
This paper reports the results of an observational study assessing the effect of the introduction of innovation activities on business competitiveness and profitability in micro, small and medium enterprises, with application to the city of Cuenca. Distinction thereby was made between the effect of product innovation, process innovation, organizational, and marketing innovation. A descriptive transversal survey was performed in 156 companies during a 2-year period (2011-2012), using a predesigned questionnaire. Analysis revealed that innovations are more incremental than radical; basically related with product improvements and the introduction of new processes, incorporating mechanisms to promote improvements in marketing and business practices. Relations were not significant and the introduction of innovations did not yield in an increase in profitability during the survey period.

Characteristics of romantic relationships during adolescence: A review of Anglo-western literature
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-12) Jerves Hermida, Elena Monserrath; Rober, Peter; Enzlin, Paul; Universidad de Cuenca; Dirección de Investigación de la Universidad de Cuenca; DIUC
Romantic relationships are a central aspect of the life of adolescents and have an important influence on the socio-affective and sexual development. This paper presents a review of the scientific literature on romantic relationships during adolescence and aims to unravel the ongoing debate in the literature and to identify possible gaps. The review encompasses the analysis of 36 studies on romantic relationships in adolescence, all published in peer-reviewed English scientific journals. The analysis of the published data was guided by five central characteristics of romantic relationships of adolescents: i.e., involvement, partner selection, content, quality, and emotions and cognitions emerging from the relationship. It was found that although during the last decade a growing interest of scholars in the study of romantic relationships in adolescents emerged, providing a certain body of knowledge on the topic in general, there are still gaps in the understanding of adolescents’ romantic relationships in different socio-cultural contexts. Limitations of the reviewed studies in terms of agreement on definitions, inconsistencies in sample population, research design and methodological approach are discussed.

An analysis of the relationship between higher education performance and socio-economic and technological indicators: the Latin American case study
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-12) Feyen, Jan; Hoof, Hubert B. Van; Universidad de Cuenca; DIUC; Dirección de Investigación de la Universidad de Cuenca
This paper reports on a study that analyzed the research output of higher education systems in a select number of Latin American countries and its relationship to several socio-economic and technological success indicators. This was placed within a broader discussion of the changing role of the university in society. The study used the rankings of the countries surveyed with respect to two major indicators: 1. higher education and training (Global Competiveness Report 2012-2013) and 2. scientific productivity of higher education institutions (HEI) as measured by the number of research papers published in international, peer reviewed journals as archived in the Scopus Database (Elsevier B.V.) and available in the SIR Iberoamericano Ranking Reports 2009-2013. The relationship of both indicators with various socio-economic and technology indicators was examined to assess the extent to which the quality and scientific productivity of a country’s higher education system affected a number of country performance indices such as global competitiveness, innovation, health and primary education, government effectiveness, knowledge and technology output and GDP per capita. The relationship between scientific productivity in the form of published, refereed papers and a country’s investment in R&D, researcher headcount per million inhabitants and the quality of its research institutes was analyzed as well. The findings at the Latin American level were compared to the research effectiveness of higher education institutes at the global level. The study found that, notwithstanding the huge variation that existed between the countries studied in the survey, the education and training country rank and the country average HEI publication record correlates with several important socio-economic indicators. Although improvements have been made many Latin American countries still trail their global counterparts in the area of research and publication.
