Item Angina de Ludwig. Presentación de un caso(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-11) Pineda Álvarez, David Manuel; Cordero, PabloAmong the odontogenic infections, Ludwig’s Angina stands as the most important because of its high mortality rate and complications, as well as because of its rapid evolution in cases were an immediate diagnosis, accurate and appropriate treatment is not provided. This study presents a literatura review of this infectious entity and a case study where the diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations from the literatura were applied.Item Artrocentesis de la articulación temporomandibular: indicaciones, técnica, resultados y justificación(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-11) Cazar Almache, Marcelo Enrique; Bravo Torres, Wilson DanielTemporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain is a predominant symptom in patients with temporomandibular disorder, and a common cause of chronic orofacial pain. Arthrocentesis of the upper joint space proved to be effective in reducing TMJ-related pain and reestablishing normal mandible range of movement in patients diagnosed with a ‘closed lock". This study describes the diagnostic of the TMJ disorders, indications of arthrocentesis, surgical technique and outcomes. In addition, it presents several case studies evaluated after almost 2O years of the evolution of arthrocentesis.Item HHiperplasias reactivas en encía: granuloma piogénico e hiperplasia fibrosa focal. Reporte de dos casos(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-11) Carvajal Endara, Andrea; Torres Calle, María FernandaLocalized reactive hyperplastic lesions on the gingiva can be focal fibrous hyperplasia, pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma and peripheral giantcell granuloma. From the clinical point of view, these injuries are similar to each other and follow a common evolution in their formation. Therefore, it is necessary to perform histological examination in order to confirm or modify a presumptive clinical diagnosis, even when lesions appear to be benign, since these lesions could be similar to some oral cavity malignant tumors. This study reports two cases of gum localized reactive hyperplastic lesions where clinical and histopathological characteristics, allowed a definitive diagnosis: focal fibrous hyperplasia and pyogenic granuloma.Item Lesión liquenoide oral de difícil diagnóstico en paciente ex - afecto a cocaína: a propósito de un caso(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-11) Rodríguez Coyago, María de Lourdes; Montalvo Jaramillo, Anhaly Carolina; Niemes Palacios, Gabriela KatiuskaOral lichenoid lesions (OLL) are considered a variation of Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) and can be recognized as a sepárate entity in itself or as an exacerbation of existing OLP. We report a male patient, 42, smoker, with a history of brain trauma and cocaine and alcohol use for 20 years. The patient is currently in recovery and has being medicated with phenytoin and pentoxifylline for 6 years. The patient attended the Diagnostic Service of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Cuenca, with severe oral pain with 7 days of evolution, which prevented him from eating. Stomatological examination showed erosive lesions surrounded by white reticular plaques at the hard palage level, gums and lip mucosa with skewed distribution. The histopathological diagnosis was not defin itive, but based on history, clin ¡cal, effective response to steroid treatment, and the results of immunological tests, it was determined as idiopathic oral lichenoid lesión. Because of the aberrant histological pattern, this type of lichenoid injury would be excluded from the categories established by the WHO for oral lichenoid reactions.Item Premolares mandibulares de dos conductos: enfoque de tratamiento y caso clínico(Universidad de Cuenca, 2013-11) Astudillo Ortiz, EstebanCases where the root anatomy is different from the normal range, can represent a challenge for professionals trained in endodontics. The mandibular premolars have earned the reputation of possessing an unusual anatomy. The incidence of two canals in mandibular premolars is rare according to researchers in endodontics. At the time of treating mandibular premolars with two canals, one must be aware of their clinical and radiographic anatomy. These teeth require special sealing and configuration techniques. This article reports and discusses the treatment recommendations for an unusual occurrence of two canals with two sepárate apical foramina.
