This study proposes the application of social cartography as a participatory diagnostic tool, utilizing a bottom-up approach, to identify issues in the planning of tourism in the Limon-Indanza canton (Morona Santiago province), located in the southeastern Ecuadorian Amazon. The study’s approach was qualitative and was implemented through social cartography and participant observation during a workshop with stakeholders. The results present a diagnostic of the tourism situation as a starting point for developing additional tools and making progress towards comprehensive territorial planning in the field of tourism. Indeed, issues related to the spontaneous development of tourism around the uniqueness of its tourist attractions are threatened by a lack of collaboration among stakeholders and larger threats such as mining. Ultimately, the use of participatory tools is suggested to capture the perceptions, imaginaries, and social constructs of tourism. The use of social cartography is recommended as a participatory diagnostic tool owing to its fostering of participant inclusion, camaraderie, and cost-benefit efficiency.

This study explores adherence to antiretrovirals in prison contexts during January 2019 to February 2020 in the CRS Turi located in the southern zone of Ecuador, from the consumption of medicines based on a triangulation of information from ethnographic data, participant observation and medical reports of biochemical tests of viral load. Adherence to antiretroviral treatment depends on the relationship between the drug and the actors within and outside the prison walls. On the other hand, official statistical data show success at the viral load level, although their superficiality does not represent the reality of the disease. Consequently, the viral load does not show a comprehensive health approach or the multi-actor dynamics in relation to the characteristics of the environment. Timely diagnosis, health education, assertive doctor-patient communication, prescription, follow-up and delivery of the drug to the patient play a preponderant role. However, the dynamics of the prison context modify the health care processes to the detriment of the prison population. Three approaches were used: a) to analyze the epidemiological data of people with HIV in prison; b) to describe the transit of antiretroviral medication in relation to adherence in prison; and c) to interpret the processes of health, disease and care in HIV-positive people.

Percepciones de los comunes sobre el patrimonio cultural edificado. Caso centro histórico de Cuenca, Ecuador
(2021) Espinoza Figueroa, Freddy Edgar; Molina Ochoa, Gabriela Estefania; Freire Chaglla, Segundo Amador; Avecillas Torres, Ángeles Imelda
This paper analyses the (common) citizen's perceptions of the built cultural heritage. The value given by the inhabitant of a territory to its heritage is not static, but changes depending on multiple factors. The exploration of variables around perception is a key task in order to foster the breadth of methods that can be combined for the management of cultural heritage. In 1999, the Historical Center of Cuenca was declared by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site, however, there is excessive concern about the object to the detriment of the subject. The objective of the research is to explore the citizens' perceptions of the built heritage. The focus of the study was mixed, qualitative from a focus group used for the construction of variables and also for the discursive contrast with the quantitative elements. The qualitative part was based on the exploration of hierarchical and grouped categorical variables. The perception of cultural heritage has a high relationship with historical aspects, it is mostly associated with monumental and ancient buildings, and there is ambiguity in belonging. The official discourse on conservation among experts generates more conservation problems than the common citizen. Keywords: Built Cultural Heritage, Common Perception, Historical Center of Cuenca.
