(Universidad de Cuenca, 2025-05-09) Yanchapaxi Velasco, Daniela Lizeth; Jaramillo Monge, Julio César
Background: Testicular cancer is a rare disease compared to other types of cancer, but it has a high incidence among young men aged 15 to 40 years. In recent decades, its prevalence has increased significantly, raising concerns. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this malignant tumor has seen a 60% rise in Latin America over the past 20 years. Objective: To evaluate the knowledge and practice of testicular self-examination among fourth-year medical students at the University of Cuenca during the academic cycle from September 2024 to February 2025. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted using a structured questionnaire. This instrument included questions about knowledge of testicular cancer, associated risk factors, and the practice of testicular self-examination. Results: 72% of the students received information about testicular cancer, but 49% considered the sources unclear or insufficient in quality. 27.5% did not receive any information at all. 33.3% were unaware of the risk factors, as well as the signs and symptoms of the disease. Regarding self-examination, 43.1% had performed it at least once, although 35.2% had not done so in over a year. Additionally, 41.2% were unaware of the basic steps for proper self-examination. Conclusion: There is a need to improve education about testicular cancer and promote the regular practice of self-examination among medical students.

COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in Azuay province, Ecuador: a cross-sectional online survey
(2021) Colebunders, Robert; Jaramillo Monge, Julio César; Obimpeh, Michael; Acurio Páez, Fausto David; Boven, Annelies; Vega Crespo, Bernardo José
We investigated the COVID-19 vaccination acceptance level in Azuay province, Ecuador through an online survey from 12th to 26th February (before the start of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Ecuador). Overall, 1219 respondents participated in the survey. The mean age was 32 ± 13 years; 693 participants (57%) were female. In total, 1109 (91%) of the participants indicated they were willing to be vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine, if the vaccine is at least 95% effective; 835 (68.5%) if it is 90% effective and 493 (40.5%) if it is 70% effective; 676 (55.5%) participants indicated they feared side effects and 237 (19.4%) thought the vaccine was not effective. Older age, having had a postgraduate education, a history of a negative COVID-19 test, a high level of worry of contracting COVID-19, believing that COVID-19 infection can be prevented with a vaccine and understanding there is currently an effective vaccine against COVID-19 were associated with higher vaccination acceptance. A vaccination education campaign will be needed to increase the knowledge of Ecuadorians about the COVID-19 vaccine and to increase their trust in the vaccine. People with a lower education level and living in rural areas may need to be targeted during such a campaign.

(Universidad de Cuenca, 2021-11-11) Sarango Quezada, María Joaquina; Timbe García, Leticia Anabell; Jaramillo Monge, Julio César
Background: Despite the increase in physicians in recent years, population health indicators related to PHC goals do not show improvement. The availability and distribution of primary care physicians are important because they are responsible for the execution of actions related to the essential goals of PHC. General objective: Describe the supply of first level care physicians in the province of Azuay through the relationship between standards and observed distribution, in 2018. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out. Data were obtained from the page of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) of the database "Health Resources and Activities 2018 - Health Statistics" published on March 31, 2020. We worked in Excel, using proportions, rates, and reasons. The results were presented using tables and maps made with the geographic information system software Quantum GIS. Results: 56% of first-level doctors are concentrated in the Cuenca canton, this together with Girón reached the WHO recommendation on medical personnel of 23 x 10 000 inhabitants. However, there was a significant shortage of top-level doctors in these cantons, as well as in the rest of the province's territory. Conclusion: The province of Azuay presents a deficit in the supply of doctors, very evident in the case of doctors of the first level of health, in addition there is an inadequate urban-rural distribution of medical personnel.
