The inadequate management of plastic waste, both in public and private institutions, is a significant cause of environmental problems, given the constant growth in its production. In the city of Cuenca, the company EMAC EP assumes the responsibility of adequately managing the treatment of this waste. The objective of this work is to analyze the company's efficiency in the management and final disposal of plastic waste during the year 2021. The methodological design adopted consists of a simple case study of descriptive scope, in which qualitative tools were used to collect information. Interviews were conducted with six representatives from different areas within the company's organizational chart, as well as with four presidents of grassroots recyclers' associations. In addition, a registration form was implemented as an instrument to record and systematize the information obtained from the recycling plant. Among the main results, factors that intervene in the recycling process such as organizational, financial, regulatory and social actors have been found. The EMAC EP Company is efficient as a company in the regulatory field, since, in this factor, norms, rules and ordinances have been established that have helped the waste management process. However, its efficiency in the plastic waste recycling process is very low since it does not intervene directly in this process to be efficient as a company.

(Universidad de Cuenca, 2024-02-11) Andrade Molina, Christian Rigoberto; León Quizhpe, Johnny Paul; Capelo Ayala, Delfa Humbertina
This study examines the social rehabilitation system of CRS Turi from the perspective and experiences of individuals who have been deprived of their freedom, served their sentences, and reintegrated into society. The effectiveness of rehabilitation projects, programs, and activities within CRS is investigated, identifying weaknesses and strengths to subsequently characterize its functioning. This is accomplished through thematic life stories with former prisoners (exPPL), allowing for a holistic understanding of the rehabilitation system that directly impacts their social reintegration. Perceptions, experiences, and perspectives of individuals who have navigated the prison system are explored, highlighting both positive aspects and areas requiring improvement. The purpose is to propose recommendations to strengthen the rehabilitation and social reintegration process in the context of CRS Turi. The findings of this study provide a critical and theoretically grounded perspective that can contribute to the formulation of public policies for this sector.

Evaluación energética de cáscaras de cacao nacional y CCN-51
(2013) Sánchez Quezada, Johanna Patricia; Capelo Ayala, Delfa Humbertina
The objective of this work was to study the fuel characteristics of the residual biomass from two varieties of cocoa shell (BRAC) in Ecuador: the domestic (national) variety and the Naranjal variety (also known as CCN-51). The study included immediate analysis and elemental analysis of BRAC. These results were used to estimate the energy potential in this biomass residue. It was estimated that there exist approximately 144.320 t/year of BRAC. This result and the low heating value of BRAC were used to estimate the energy potential, which is close to 42.688 toe/year (tons of oil equivalent per year). This energy potential would allow generating 215.477 MJ of energy. The BRAC can be used to fuel boilers (in Rankine cycle schemes) for producing electricity, in which up to 140.060 MJ could be generated. This amount of energy could allow operating a thermal plant with capacity of 40 MW. However, biomass dispersion is a limitation to erect one thermal plant only. Thus, three thermal plants of 15 MW each, located in Esmeralds, Manabi, and Guayas, are proposed. Economic analysis showed that it seems viable generating electricity from BRAC. The amount of energy that could be produced is approximately 1,21% of the electricity produced in Ecuador. Using BRAC in these conditions could allow a reduction of 189,723 t/year of CO2.

The relationship between organizational culture and process effectiveness is fundamental in institutional management. The objective of this study was to describe the incidence of the values of the organizational culture of the University of Cuenca on the effectiveness of the degree process of its students. It is a simple case study with a quantitative design. We worked with nursing, civil engineering and basic education students in UIC I or II. The selection of careers was based on a non-probabilistic sampling based on criteria such as area of knowledge, location in different campuses and representativeness. Descriptive and correlational statistical techniques were used with software such as SPSS and Jamovi to analyze the data. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between the values of the organizational culture of the university and the effectiveness of the degree process. However, areas for improvement were identified, especially in the "Respect - Equity" and "Tangible Aspects" dimensions, which showed weaker correlations. This weakness suggests the need to strengthen these areas to improve the effectiveness of the titration process. In addition, a moderate to high correlation was observed between Civil Engineering and Nursing careers with the dimensions analyzed, while Basic Education showed a moderate to weak correlation, indicating a less robust relationship between values and effectiveness.

(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-03-07) Serpa Alulima, Digna Elizabeth; Capelo Ayala, Delfa Humbertina
Study of migration in women has been a very controversial topic, due to it is increase in recent decades; as well as, the impact it has had on society. In this sense, examining multiple ways in which migration and social change are related has been considered a very important task around the world. This research considered it pertinent to analyze the processes of internal migration of women who are working informally, based on gender, ethnicity and social class. In order to respond to this objective, a qualitative type of research was proposed, with an exploratory-descriptive scope and a cross section; Therefore, semi-structured interviews, participant observation sheet and sociodemographic sheet were applied to twelve voluntary participants. The results showed that trans-sectoral conditions (such as social class, ethnicity, educational level and among others) condition activities of people in a situation of human mobility. In conclusion, informal work becomes the best option for women in a situation of internal mobility, because intersectionality works based on the understanding of discrimination processes associated with gender issues, cultural elements, racialization and sexualization processes.

The transportation activity has traditionally been masculinized, rooted in a sexual division of labor that perpetuates gender roles. There is a female presence, albeit limited, in this sector. This research proposes to investigate the self-perception of women who work as public transport operators in the city of Cuenca. For this purpose, it resorts to a descriptive methodology with a qualitative approach, using the multiple case study as a research strategy. Data collection was carried out through interviews with a representative sample of six women operators. The results show that women operators face gender challenges, harassment and discrimination, entering the sector due to economic needs. Their self-perception highlights commitment in challenging the traditional conception of male jobs, showing resilience in their contribution to public transport. They develop strategies to reconcile work and family, using flexible hours and support networks. Awareness of the problem is reflected in the search for solutions, highlighting the importance of technology and cultural change for gender equity at work. The comparative analysis reveals that, although they perceive their work as an opportunity, they face risks, highlighting the need to address challenges to improve working conditions. In conclusion, the research explores the self-perceptions of women telecommunication operators.
