Item Análisis comparativo en la reducción del gasto de filtración y el gradiente hidráulico entre las pantallas contra filtración y la geomembrana en presas de tierra homogénea(2014) Chacón Villa, Angel Hernán; Andino Encalada, Juan Alejandro; Armas Novoa, RolandoThe program for Water management and soil (PROMAS),that makes the PACALORI project has main purpose in the flood control and water supply for irrigation in the province of Los Ríos ,so large hydraulic infrastructure to store water during the winter and use it during the summer will be built. The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the reduction of the seepage flow and hydraulic gradient in homogeneous earth dam of the PACALORI project for various cases of action against seepage through simulation with Geostudio(SEEP/W) software , namely in order to compare with the ecological flows established during the feasibility stage and decide whether or not action is required against filtration. In the different cases analyzed was determined that the contribution of seepage flow to ecological flow, It's negligible. For this reason, in this analysis it was concluded that no action are required against seepage, however , by international experience in earth dams, is recommended build a clay cutoff.Item Análisis comparativo entre los métodos de estabiliad de taludes aplicados a las presas de tierra del Proyecto PACALORI(2013) Espinoza Durán, Carlos Eduardo; Tapia Berzoza, Leandro Enrique; Cisneros Espinoza, Felipe Eduardo; Armas Novoa, RolandoThe following investigation work focuses on using digital modelling tools to quantify the safety on an earth dam. The present study analyzes the behavior of the stress to which the PACALORI project dams will be subject to. Prior to the calculation, sampling and testing are performed to assign own resistance geotechnical characteristics of foundation and the embankment. Then, the SLOPE/W software is used to model the dam's geometry and mechanical characteristics are introduced; these parameters will govern the behavior of the structure itself. Variability of hypotheses are considered that can be assigned to the methods used in the slope stability analysis, and the conditions in which they are obtaining a reliable safety factor. The purpose of this information is to proceed to model the mechanical behavior of the dam, allowing approximate minimum safety factors to be taken care of for the design and future mitigation measures. Finally, we present the conclusions and recommendations for the model´s calculations in the rest of the treated project dams.Item Análisis del gasto de filtración a través de las ataguías aguas arriba y abajo de la presa de HCR en el proyecto hidroeléctrico minas San Francisco-La Unión(2012) Alvarez Ordóñez, René Fernando; Armas Novoa, RolandoItem Análisis geotécnico-económico comparativo entre diques construidos con materiales arcillosos y gravosos en el proyecto control de inundaciones del río Cañar(2014) Lligüi Ortega, Edgar Antonio; Ñauta Ñauta, Paul Eduardo; Armas Novoa, Rolando; León Rodríguez, Jorge VíctorThe present study aims to analyze from a geotechnical perspective, alternatives to existing methods employed for flood control by the Cañar River project. By building four full-scale test embankments, the project was able to determine the most effective option to be implemented. Particular attention was given to construction methodology and quality control during each stage of the construction process to ensure the functionality, features and structural strength of the levees after completion. By laboratory tests carried out on subsurface conditions and materials in the area, it was confirmed that the required parameters for implementation in the final construction project were met. Furthermore, to avoid any catastrophic failures, each embankment was subjected to permeability and stability analysis. All four were found to comply with the appropriate design criteria. Finally, it was determined that each of the four alternatives were of optimum levee structural strength and implementable if so desired by the project; although from the economic perspective states that themost appropriate solutions are the clay dike screen and granular shoulder, and homogeneous clay dam, the first will be built on the banks of rivers, and the second along the bypass.Item Comparación entre valores de la capacidad soportante de una cimentación superficial calculada por estados límites y factor de seguridad global(2006) Quilambaqui Reinoso, Adrián Xavier; Armas Novoa, RolandoItem Comprobación de las correlaciones de la presión de expansión con las propiedades índices en suelos del sector Challuabamba, Cuenca, recomendaciones para la construcción de cimentaciones(2012) Vélez Dávila, Pablo Esteban; Armas Novoa, RolandoItem Control de asentamientos en diques sobre suelos blandos construidos en el proyecto control de inundaciones del Río Cañar(2014) Ganzhi Fajardo, Fabián Patricio; Pinos Ruiz, Cristian Fernando; Armas Novoa, Rolando; León Rodríguez, Jorge VíctorThis study aims to make a control of settlements that occur in the levees built in the "Control de inundaciones del Río Cañar" project, for which we calculate immediate settlements, primary and secondary settlements consolidation that will occur in the soil stratum on which the levees are settled and those calculated values are compared with results both made in surveying the field as with the project design values. We briefly described the processes needed to be followed to calculate the mentioned settlements as well as the procedures for constructing levees based in the technical specifications. Also discussed a topic rarely mentioned as subsidence or own settlement of the levee body. Before the settlements calculations, trial data that are involved in those calculations arecollected to establish the mechanical-geotechnical characteristics of each stratum, with this information proceeds to calculate the settlements with the help of a sheet Excel software. Topographic measurements were performed for five months by two surveying instruments: "Differential GPS" and "topographic level." Finally we exposed the conclusions and recommendations on the results of calculations, measurements and design values, and a projection of time on the levees will have the total settlements.Item Control de calidad de terraplenes construidos: criterios e hipótesis(2004) Molina Mesías, María Ximena; Armas Novoa, RolandoItem Determinación de la correlación entre los índices DCP in SITU CBR de laboratorio(2017) León Calderón, Johnatan Francisco; Zeas Cárdenas, Raúl Bernardo; Armas Novoa, RolandoThis experimental work develops a methodology to find the correlation between the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) index. Through laboratory essays, the physical (Particle size, Atterberg Limits, Moisture and Density) and mechanical properties (CBR and DCP), were determined. The soil used for the tests belongs to Geological Formation “Azogues” located in Ecuador’s Austral region. The results suggest two correlations. The first one, between CBR and the DCP test at blows to penetrate 44 mm, offered by the S-200 Cone, which was developed by Professor Sowers. The second correlation is between the DCP index that offers the Cone developed by A.J. Scala, in mm/blow and CBR. The correlation for the S-200 Cone is the first investigation about the use of this equipment in road engineering. The Scala’s Cone serves as a support for the validation of the process at being compared with other existents correlation for that equipment. The landslide susceptibility map was prepared using the methodology of Varhson-Mora-Mora (2002). As a result of the mapping, it was obtained that the area of "very high" susceptibility occupies an area of 4,13 ha (9,9%); the area of "high" susceptibility represents 11,00 ha (26,4%); "moderate" susceptibility 14,78 ha (35,6%); "low" 10,30 ha (24,8%) and "very low" 1,37 ha (3,3%). In general, landslides are located mostly (86,7%) over classified as "high" and "very high" susceptibility areas. Furthermore, the map of expansive potential of clays wasobtained by superimposing the map of the spatial distribution of montmorillonite with the map of susceptibility to soil moisture, applying for each calculation method of Marin-Nieto (1991) and classification proposed by Patrone and Prefumo (2005), respectively. The interpolation method applied was the Inverse Distance Weighted(IDW).The result revealed that the damage observed on the roads and paths of the "Colinas de Challuabamba" urbanization are caused by the presence of expansive mineral montmorillonite (71,4%) and soil moisture in the active layer classified as " moderate" (74,3%).Item Dimensionamiento geotécnico de cimentaciones superficiales en las unidades geotécnicas de la ciudad de Cuenca(2010) Riquetti Morales, Juan Pablo; Armas Novoa, Rolando; Hernández Caneiro, Julio; García, Carlos; Riquetti Vélez, IvánItem Diseño de la losa de cimentación de un tanque de almacenamiento de agua ubicado en la Universidad de Cuenca: criterio de estabilidad por fallo en la base y por deformación (asentamiento absoluto)(2010) Caldas Calle, Ana Ximena; Salas Vázquez, Cristian Alfonso; Bojorque Iñeguez, Jaime Asdrúbal; Armas Novoa, RolandoItem Diseño geotécnico de la cimentación de los tanques de digestión anaeróbica para la planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales de Guangarcucho(2018) Fierro Guanuchi, Jéssica Andrea; Segarra Villacís, Mayra Jessenia; Armas Novoa, RolandoThe growth of Cuenca requires in response to environmental sanitation, the built of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant nearby Guangarcucho. The extension of the tanks of the plant requires a foundation able to resist the total loads (self-weight, additional load and seismic load) during its service life. The main objective of this thesis is to design the foundation for one of three anaerobic digestion tanks (worst case) that will be installed in the treatment plant. According to the Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) results and geophysical studies (seismic refraction) carried out in the area of interest, the shear strength (c and Ø) and stress-deformational (E and μ) parameters of soil deposits have been analyzed. Based on these parameters, the bearing capacity for stability and deformation of soils has been determined. To fulfill the stability requirement due to base failure, a depth of six meters is required. The stability requirement of tipping and sliding has been verified, even for the worst case. The results of immediate or elastic settlements using the elasticity theory, both manually and computationally, were 1.90 and 5.00 cm, respectively. Current regulation (NEC-SE-CM, 2015) does not contain specific requirements of admissible settlements for this type of structures, thus the compliance of deformation criterion will depend on project specifications.Item Estabilización de un suelo arcilloso con productos químicos(2010) Chacha Pesántez, Cristian Javier; Palomeque Larriva, Goethe Emmanuel; Armas Novoa, RolandoItem Estudio comparativo de la influencia de los parámetros de resistencia, la presión de poro y el método de análisis de estabilidad, en el factor de seguridad de un talud(2009-06) Vintimilla Zavala, Mario Bernardo; Armas Novoa, RolandoItem Estudio comparativo del método colombiano y la Nevi-12, para vías de bajo volumen de tránsito, con subrasante de la mina Chocarsi(2016) Londa Cañar, Byron Fabián; Maisincho Yunga, Luis Marcelo; Armas Novoa, RolandoThe purpose of this study is to stablish the main physical and mechanical parameters of the “Chocarsi” mine, canton Cuenca, supported by a series of laboratory tests. The parameters examined helped to analyze the quality of the material to be used for the parameters examined helped to analyze the quality of the material to be used for the improvement of the subgrade for low-traffic volume roads. The quality analysis was conducted through the index C.B.R. in samples submerged for 96 hours. Additionally, in this study by using the material of the “Chocarsi” mine as the improvement of the subgrade, pavement structures for low-traffic volume roads are proposed. These structures will be based on the method described in the book Pavement Engineering “Ingenieria de Pavimentos para Carreteras” by Monejo Fonseca, 2002. These structures will be least expensive ones suggested by this method. Furthermore, a pavement structure with double superficial treatment placed over the material of the mine “Chocarsi” will be suggested. This is an economical solution for the low-traffic volume roads in Cuenca.Item Estudio comparativo entre las envolventes efectivas obtenidas con ensayos triaxiales consolidado drenado y consolidado-no drenado, con medición de presión de poro, en suelos compactados saturados de la presa Chojampe 2 de la provincia de Los Ríos(2015) González Avila, María Fernanda; Pesántez Guaraca, Orlando Octavio; Armas Novoa, RolandoFor the stability study of the slope downstream of the Chojampe 2 dam, under the “operation” charge state, an analysis in effective stresses is required and, therefore, to know the envelopes consolidated drained, CD, of the soils previously saturated and compacted of the material of the curtain. These effective envelopes, can be obtained through the triaxial tests consolidated-drained or consolidated-undrained whit measure of the pore pressure. The choice of one or another test is in function of time of execution of the same. However, the effective envelopes obtained by both paths are not equal, so that a comparative analysis of said envelopes is performed. The tests for this study was provided by the PROMAS, responsible for the study and design the PACALORI project. The enveloped consolidated drained were obtained by analytical method (p´ vs q´) which offers more precision in the result and it concludes thereof, that the envelope consolidated-drained,CD,obtained by the triaxial test Consolidated Drained, It is greater than the Consolidated-Drained, CD envelope, obtained by Consolidated-undrained, CU, test with pore pressure measurement. Therefore, it can be applied to the stability analysis, the results of the Consolidated Drained envelope obtained by the Consolidated undrained test with pore pressure measurement, since it reduces time of investigation of the materials of loan and it is on the safe part.Item Estudio de estabilidad de los taludes de las presas del Proyecto Pacalori, teniendo en cuenta la acción sísmica(2014) Ortiz Quizhpi, Wilian Francisco; Portilla Flores, Edgar Ismael; Armas Novoa, RolandoIn this thesis we show a procedure to analyze the slope stability of earth dams, for three load conditions (end of construction, operation and rapid drawdown), with and without earthquake loading. To analyze the slope stability of earth dams, we applied the Limit Equilibrium Pseudostatic Method in effective strength (c' and ɸ' obtained from consolidated-undrainedtriaxial tests on saturated specimens with pore water pressure measurement), for the three load conditions. The pseudostatic method incorporates the earthquake loading using a horizontal force, which is applied in the center of gravity of each slice, where the sliding mass is divided for the equilibrium analysis. Finally, it was feasible to obtain a safety factor that must meet the minimum requirements established by the Spanish Code, which was used for this project. The procedure to analyze the slope stability of earth dams described in this thesis was tested on the Chojampe 2 dam, belonging to the PACALORI Project. The safety factors were obtained applying the GEOSTUDIO 2007 (SLOPE/W) program. The final results were a 1:3 upstream slope and a 1:2.75 downstream slope, the latter with blanket drain. These conditions meet the safety factors required by the Spanish Code, therefore the designed slopes for the Chojampe 2 dam are stable, secure and economic.Item Estudio de la instrumentación a utilizar en las presas de tierra del proyecto Pacalori(2014) Beltrán Tenorio, Carlos Alberto; Vintimilla Sánchez, Juan José; Armas Novoa, RolandoThis research focuses on defining the necessary instrumentation for Lechugal 2 earth dambelonging to PACALORI project (Plan de Aprovechamiento y Control de Aguas de la Provincia de Los Ríos) and to serve as a methodology in the design of instrumentation for the remaining twelve dams of the project.Previously, the monitoring requirements presented in an earth dam, the type of instrumentation used and their location in sensitive or critical parts of the dam, which may damage or significant changes during operation were investigated. After analyzing all these parameters and integrate them to the economy of the project, which is presented as an obstacle in the selection of instruments by their costs. We propose the use of Casagrande piezometers to control the higher current line (LCS for its acronym in Spanish) and the water table. The use of survey monuments for the observation of the horizontal and vertical motions are also investigated, in order to generate a minimal monitoring data on analyzing the behavior of the dam. To locate the piezometers and build the monuments with recommended dimensionsshapes and installation levels, as well as the methodology of data collection for posterior analysis. Finally, with this information we proceed to the location of the instrumentation in the sections of the dam for their presentation in mapsthat will be used during construction.Item Estudio de la utilización de geotextiles como filtro en presas de tierra homegeneas(2015) Landi Durán, Henry Fernando; Pesántez Alvarado, Carlos Efrén; Armas Novoa, RolandoGeotextiles have been used over time as filter material. For this reason, a research was conducted to evaluate the use of geotextiles as filters in earth dams. Each of the characteristics and the uses of geotextiles were studied in detail, focusing on the use as filters to determine whether it is possible to apply them in the earth dams of PACALORI Project. Trials were performed on three types of geotextiles, subjecting to hydraulic gradients that were much higher than those that generally occur in earth dams. These trials resulted the great capacity of geotextiles to resist and filter under very high hydraulic gradients, similar to 1000, deciding that it is possible to use them as filter in this type of project. The results obtained from this research on three types of nonwoven geotextiles (NT-1400, NT 1600 and NT-1800) have allowed designing drains of the homogeneous earth dams of PACALORI Project, using geotextile NT -1800 as filter. It was due to their permeability, resistance to mechanical syphonage and the puncture that drainage materials can produce (crushed stone).
