Gingival recession is the apical displacement of the marginal gingiva, its origin is mul-
tifactorial and its presence can trigger several periodontal complications. Previous re-
ports have shown that the prevalence of gingival recession fluctuates between 13.7%
and 86.9%. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of gingival
recession and its associated risk factors among students of the Faculty of Dentistry ofthe
University of Cuenca, Ecuador. In addition, we classified recessions according to Miller
and described their characteristics.
