Peritonitis secundaria y factores asociados en el Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga. Cuenca, enero a junio del 2013

Abstract

Objective: Identify and quantify the influence of the different factors related to the development of secondary peritonitis in “Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga” during 2013. Methods: Descriptive study between January and June 2013 from the Department of Surgery of 291 patients. The following variables were recorded: age, sex, origin, level of education, nutritional status, physical state according to ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists), diagnoses, comorbidities, and time of clinical evolution. Descriptive statistics were utilized to present analyze the results. To determine association and statistical significance chi squared was utilized. Also reason of prevalence (RP) was employed to measure the size of the effect. Results: The mean age was 41,01 years, standard deviation +-17,90 years; the majority were male from urban areas and with high school level of education. Prevalence of peritonitis was 8,6%, and the main causes were postsurgical in nature (28%), The main reason to increase risk of secondary peritonitis were: patients with ASA III RP 4,35 (2,2-8,4), with waiting periods greater than 48 hours prior to surgery RP 6,4 (3,14-13,10), comorbidities such as HTA RP 2,87 (1,33-6,06), diabetes RP 2,72 (1,04-7,14) and immunosuppression RP 12 (8,2-17,7) Conclusions: Secondary peritonitis is a prevalent disease in our population with a frequency of 8,6%, and is associated to comorbidities, as well as immunosuppression and malnutrition.
