Abstract: | Hydraulic structures constitute a fundamental element for the development of the regions,
they have been, are and probably will be widely used in projects to provide water for human
consumption, food production, hydroelectric generation, and transportation, treatment and
disposal projects. final sewage among the most common. Existing methods for the analysis
and design of hydraulic structures are mainly based on simplifying assumptions that in some
cases tend to produce inaccurate representations of actual flow conditions. The flow in
channels with a circular section (generally used for sewers) with the influence of a lateral
weir that is used for the evacuation of the excess flow, has certain peculiarities that could
deviate it from the hypotheses assumed for the calculation of its flow profile, using these
simplified methods. That is why in the present study an analysis of the flow process in
circular section channels with the influence of a lateral weir is developed to validate/verify
and/or modify the criteria and procedures for the estimation of its corresponding flow profile,
applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the numerical solution of the governing
equations. For which 10 study cases have been modeled using the OpenFoam software,
varying the diameter of the cross section of the channel (two diameters) and the inlet flow
(10 flow values). For the analysis of validation/verification and/or modification of the current
methodology, the calculation was carried out by applying the dynamic equation for spatially
varied flow of decreasing rate, due to the intervention of a lateral spillway, which represents
a differential equation that, by not having an analytical solution requires the application of a
numerical method for its solution. The selected method corresponds to the Runge Kutta
method of order 4. With the help of both a quantitative and qualitative analysis between the
conventional calculation and the numerical modeling of the flow, it is concluded that the empirical equations that assume a unidirectional flow are valid because the profile of the flow
obtained through the software in relation to the flow profile calculated with the analytical
method, presents maximum variations of up to 1.74%, which do not constitute considerable
errors that invalidate the applied methodology. Finally, with the application of a multiple
linear regression process, an equation has been obtained for estimating the flow profile under
the conditions used in this study, presenting a variation of 3.87% with reference to the
conventional theoretical model, which constitutes a simplified model that can be applied to
calculate the flow profile for conditions similar to those used to obtain the model, and also
indicates the potential to obtain a simplified model based on a greater range of variation of
the input parameters (diameter , slope of the channel, inlet flow, etc.) that allows obtaining a
model with a broader range of application. |
