Abstract
Environmental pollution is a problem that has been growing over the years. Cuenca, an Ecuadorian city classified as an environmental reference, also suffers from it. In this context, I set out to generate an eco-activist, dystopian and satirical sculptural proposal, from a critique of inappropriate social behaviors, through aesthetic experiments with the ugly and the grotesque, conceiving art as a powerful tool for environmental awareness and education: a formidable resource with which to propose possible suitable alternatives to avoid dystopian futures. Therefore, through the aesthetic representation of the ugly and the grotesque, I sought to disturb and challenge the viewer, inviting them to question the social behaviors that feed various forms of pollution. I addressed, from a critical and eco-activist perspective, the ecological crisis and the environmental problems that the city faces. I focused on its urban and industrial contexts, and used allegory and satire to make visible the inappropriate human behaviors that contribute to the deterioration of the environment. The dystopian setting of the work shows a future where the human being has evolved, mutated or has been replaced, through humanoid figures with animal characters, illustrative of a potential consequence of our systematic self-destructive behavior.
Resumen
La contaminación ambiental es una problemática que crece a lo largo de los años. Cuenca, ciudad ecuatoriana catalogada como referente ambiental, también la padece. En este contexto, me propuse generar una propuesta escultórica ecoactivista, distópica y satírica, desde una crítica a los comportamientos sociales inapropiados, mediante experimentaciones estéticas de lo feo y lo grotesco, concibiendo el arte como una herramienta poderosa para la sensibilización y la educación ambiental: un recurso formidable con el cual proponer posibles alternativas idóneas para evitar futuros distópicos. Por ello, mediante la representación estética de la feo y lo grotesco, busqué incomodar y desafiar al espectador, invitándolo a cuestionar los comportamientos sociales que alimentan diversas formas de contaminación. Abordé, desde una perspectiva crítica y ecoactivista, la crisis ecológica y los problemas ambientales que enfrenta la ciudad. Me enfoqué en sus contextos urbano e industrial, y utilicé la alegoría y la sátira para visibilizar los comportamientos humanos inapropiados que contribuyen al deterioro del entorno. El escenario distópico de la obra muestra un futuro donde el ser humano ha evolucionado, mutado o ha sido reemplazado, a través de figuras humanoides con caracteres animales, ilustrativas de una potencial consecuencia de nuestro sistemático comportamiento autodestructivo.
