Abstract
This project is entitled "Structural and technical vocal analysis applied to the interpretation of
two songs directly for a soprano voice from the musical West Side Story by composer
Leonard Bernstein". The principal objective is to develop a detailed study of each of the topics
that can help interpretation. This project seeks to define different ways that facilitate the
appropriation of the chosen character, with the following relevant sections: the history of the
genre "Musical", a brief summary of the work "West Side Story", the study of the structure of
the songs, the identity of the character to be interpreted and the proposal to address each of
the issues. The basic aspects works’ formal analysis, their structure, parameters, expressive
means, emotional planes and technical tips considered necessary to facilitate a good staging
will be studied. We will start from the study of the evolution of the "Musical" genre with the
intention of knowing the bases that determined its style; its beginnings and its miscegenation
when traveling through different cultures. With the knowledge of the history, the study of the
different works and the study of each of the characters, we will be able to fulfill ourselves with
the ideas of the composer to initiate the appropriation. Specifically in this work our character
is "María" and what we will seek is to know how her identity, the way in which she expresses
and transmits her emotions has a well-founded basis in the musical structure.
Resumen
El presente trabajo se titula “Análisis estructural y técnico vocal aplicado a la interpretación
de dos temas para soprano del musical West Side Story del compositor Leonard Bernstein”.
El objetivo principal de este trabajo, es desarrollar un estudio detallado de cada uno de los
temas que pueda ayudar a la interpretación. Se busca definir los medios que faciliten la
apropiación del personaje escogido, con las siguientes secciones consideradas relevantes:
la historia del género “Musical”, un breve resumen de obra “West Side Story”, el estudio de la
estructura de las canciones, la identidad del personaje que se interpretará y la propuesta para
abordar cada uno de los temas. Se estudiarán los aspectos básicos de análisis formal de las
obras, su estructura, parámetros, medios expresivos, planos emocionales y tips técnicos
considerados necesarios para facilitar una buena puesta en escena. Partiremos desde un
estudio necesario de la evolución del género “Musical” con la intención de conocer las bases
que determinaron el estilo de este; sus inicios y su mestizaje al viajar por diferentes culturas.
Con el conocimiento de la historia, el estudio de las obras y el carácter de los personajes
podremos nutrirnos de las ideas del compositor para iniciar la apropiación. Puntualmente en
este trabajo nuestro personaje es “María” y lo que buscaremos es conocer como su identidad,
la forma en que se expresa y transmite sus emociones tiene una base bien cimentada en la
estructura musical.
