Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on commercial SMEs in Cuenca
by evaluating the competitiveness of their financial management and comparative analysis
between the years before and after the pandemic through the analysis of their financial statements
and complementary economic information.
The development of the analysis began with the review of financial data from the balance sheet
and income statement of the SMEs belonging to the commercial sector of Cuenca, for the
selection of the companies the stratified random sampling technique was used. Based on these
data, a financial analysis was carried out by calculating financial ratios.
It was possible to conclude that the commercial SMEs from Cuenca did present negative effects
derived from the pandemic, however, they had (in general) enough liquidity to cover their short
term obligations, in addition, they had to invest in innovation in order to make the right decisions
and try to adapt to the new environment that was experienced as a result of the pandemic.
Resumen
El objetivo del presente trabajo es realizar un análisis del impacto del COVID-19 en las empresas
PYMES comerciales cuencanas mediante la evaluación de la competitividad de la gestión
financiera y análisis comparativo entre años anteriores a la pandemia y posteriores por medio del
análisis de sus estados financieros e información económica complementaria.
El desarrollo del análisis inició con la revisión de los datos de tipo financiero provenientes del
balance general y del estado de resultados de las PYMES pertenecientes al sector comercial
cuencano, para la selección de las empresas se utilizó la técnica muestreo aleatorio estratificado.
A partir de estos datos se procedió a realizar un análisis financiero mediante el cálculo de los
ratios financieros.
Se pudo concluir que las PYMES comerciales cuencanas sí presentaron efectos negativos
derivados de la pandemia, sin embargo, tuvieron (en general) la suficiente liquidez para cubrir
sus obligaciones de corto plazo, además, debieron invertir en innovación con el fin de tomar
decisiones acertadas y tratar de adaptarse al nuevo entorno que se vivió producto de la pandemia.
