Prevalencia de depresión y factores asociados en el adulto mayor en las Unidades de Salud de Quilloac y Cañar en el año 2017 - 2018

Abstract

Objective: to determine the prevalence of depression and associated factors in older adults of the health units of Quilloac and Cañar in 2017 - 2018.

Methods and materials: a cross-sectional and analytical study was carried out in the health units of Quilloac and Cañar of the Province of Cañar, Ecuador. The observation units consisted of older adults of both sexes, over 65 years old, with functional autonomy, and willing to participate in the study. A randomized sample was made, including a total of 323 individuals, using the Yesavage scale and the FF-SIL test as instruments to determine the study variables included in a data collection form. For the analysis, the chi square test and the OR with their 95% CI were calculated to evaluate the association between variables.

Results: the prevalence of depression was 45.7% in Cañar and 35.8% in Quilloac. The factors associated with depression in the Cañar health unit were migration (OR= 4.85, 95% CI= 1.70-13.85, p=0.001), comorbidities (OR= 3.22, 95% CI %= 1.66-6.24, p= 0.001) and not being indigenous (OR= 2.30, 95% CI= 1.14-4.65, p= 0.018), while in the health unit of Quilloac, the presence of comorbidities (OR= 2.73, 95% CI= 1.16-6.39, p= 0.018) and not being indigenous (OR= 0.37, 95% CI= 0.18-0.74; p=0.004) were associated with depression.

Conclusions: the prevalence of depression was 35-45%. Family migration, comorbidities and self-identification were factors associated with depression in this population of older adults
