Abstract

The following research analyzes the impact of the implementation of the Vee diagram as an alternative to improve the academic performance and conceptions of students when solving mathematical problems. The methodology applied is quasi-experimental cross-sectional research with a quantitative approach and correlational reach. As instruments to obtain the

information, a pretest and posttest on specific content was applied to two groups of eighth- year EGB, a control group and an experimental group; additionally, the experimental group

filled in a survey. Students were selected randomly and were exposed to different strategies to solve mathematical problems: the control group used a traditional approach and the experimental group used the Vee Diagram approach adapted to the context and age of the students. To analyze the results, an statistical analysis was applied, which evidenced significant differences between the aforementioned strategies. Moreover, the general hypothesis that in the experimental group, the implementation of the Vee diagram strategy to solve mathematical problems improves the academic performance and conceptions of the eight-year EGB students of the Unidad Educativa Borja school is confirmed. The research concluded that this strategy is effective to improve the mathematical competence of the students and change their conceptions around the resolution of mathematical problems.
