Características del cepillado dental en mujeres embarazadas que acuden a la Clínica Humanitaria Fundación Pablo Jaramillo Crespo, periodo noviembre-diciembre de 2017

Abstract

Pregnancy is a physiological state where multiple changes affecting the oral cavity occur, making it prone to suffer diseases such as caries and periodontal disease. To reduce the risk of suffering from these diseases, effective control of bacterial plaque is necessary through toothbrush. This study is a cross section descriptive type and the main objective was to describe the characteristics of toothbrush in pregnant women attending the Pablo Jaramillo Crespo Humanitarian Foundation Clinic in the city of Cuenca. The sample consisted of 153 pregnant women who met both, inclusion and exclusion criteria. The duration and type of movement performed by the patients was assessed using a regular brushing recording and additionally the oral hygiene index of O'Leary was performed. After these processes, the results obtained showed that the majority of patients performed horizontal movements during toothbrush and the length was of 65.78 seconds in average. Therefore, the oral hygiene index turned out to be deficient, indicating the lack of knowledge for a good oral hygiene within this group of priority attention
