Estoa journal publishes two issues per year, on a biannual basis, corresponding to the periods January–June and July–December. Since April 2026, it has adopted a continuous publication model. This allows for the immediate dissemination of articles once they have successfully completed the editorial process, enhancing the timeliness, visibility, and circulation of scientific knowledge.
Entre racionalidad geométrica y sensibilidad material

In 1961, the Dutch architect Joop van Stigt received the commission to design a small staff canteen at the University of Twente. His proposal, which takes as a point of departure a very precise structural reasoning –both in geometric and bearing terms– reveals a simultaneous extraordinary effort to emphasize the haptic dimension of the built space. Halfway between exactness and imperfection, between abstraction and a palpable condition, between the artificial and the natural world, this project is based on the organic value of wood as a building material, calling for a line of research alternative to the machinist paradigm, which seeks a redemption from the Cartesian anxieties of the modern movement, in order to bring architecture closer to man and nature
Ciudad compacta, ciudad dispersa. Lenguaje y manipulación en la comunicación gráfica arquitectónica comercial

The image has acquired a predominant role in the architectural discourse, reducing the space to an object of visual consumption. The current ocularcentrism hegemony constitutes a base in the architectural and urban conception. Thus, architecture rather than a space, is an image with its own language, susceptible of multiple interpretations. Under this principle, certain values are associated in an adulterated way to recurrent elements, generating dynamics of manipulation in their graphic communication. With this background, two urban models are contrasted: the compact city and the sprawled city. The approach to its symbolic intentionality is based on the categories given to “function and sign in architecture”, proposed by Umberto Eco: primary (denotative) and secondary (connotative) functions. These concepts have been applied in the analysis of the graphics of two Ecuadorian magazines, one of specialized diffusion (Trama) and one of popular diffusion (El Portal). The contrasting of the found values finally generates a discussion about the graphic language, its ethics, and the role of the graphics of other categories of architectural diffusion, such as the scientific magazines or the ‘little magazines’ of 1960’s – 1970’s in response to the “society of the spectacle” of that time.
El dibujo y su aporte a la identificación de valores de la arquitectura vernácula

Vernacular architecture is considered as a cultural legacy which study has gained prominence during the last decades. Indeed, its complex and dynamic nature requires a depth understanding in order to guarantee its conservation and to maximize its use as a source of innovation for contemporary architecture. This paper reflects on the importance of drawings as a potential tool to communicate and evidence the cultural heritage values attached to these modest buildings. A comparative analysis is presented, contrasting quantitative data and qualitative data obtained from the research carried out at the end of the eighties. The main findings emphasize the role of drawings as a no verbal – visual language easy to comprehend for diverse audiences and capable to communicate valuable information to different fields.
Inmersividad analógica: descubriendo el dibujo esférico entre subjetividad y objetividad

The use of analog graphics has been reduced compared to powerful digital representation. However, the long history of the company generates new paths of evolution. As a result, the autograph goes deep into digital complexity and merges with it. The productions detailed here, which are nurtured by architecture, engineering and information technology, oscillate between subjective impression and the reinterpretation of basic concepts of perspective. They aim to share and disseminate applications, both professional and in the classroom. Specifically, the intuitive and experimental search is proposed: the graphic thought of an immersive spatial representation. This singular representation captures in the two dimensions of a plane the characteristic unfolding of a surface (in particular, that of the sphere and that of the cube) centered on the observer. In other words, it works with two of the most frequent anamorphoses that digital technology uses for virtual reality contents. The aim is to open the doors to new hybrid instruments for design and architectural uplifting, as well as for art and graphic disciplines in general.
