Within Aquatic Life. Beyond the Anthropogenic Maritorium Prospect
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, 2023-01-03) Mannisi, Alban; Tapia Martin, Carlos; Herrera Arango, Johana; Pittungnapoo, Witiya; Saito, Shota
Enquiries into non-anthropogenic cultural landscapes, such as marine environments, reveal unsuspected dynamics due to the resurgence of ecosophies that are alien to the globalised economy and territorialisation as a basis for appropriation and subsequent indiscriminate exploitation. Disturbed by the wanderings of geo-engineering, several regions of the world have recently touched on key arguments with points in common that could revitalise nonhuman biospheres and, in them, human ones. When considering maritime dynamics, the ocean must be seen as an entity. Following the ever-inspiring historical literatures of Fernand Braudel and expanding on the “mediterraneity” he formulated, we would be testing another concept involving a change in mentality of governmentality: “maritoriums”, a conceptualisation from 1970s Chilean architecture. Based on case studies, we will discuss significant examples in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and Asian oceans and rivers that contribute to the current debate on.
The city is not neutral, the right to it, its use and enjoyment by the subjects are conditioned, among other issues, by gender. In the case of women, their daily mobility decisions depend, to a large extent, on personal safety and the role of care. To reflect and delve into the subject, university community in Cuenca-Ecuador was taken as a case study. Two instruments were applied: survey and semi-structured interviews to teachers, administrative staff and students of the institution. The main results indicate that there are differences in daily mobility conditioned by gender. Studies like this warn about factors that inhibit sustainable mobility and contribute to understanding the phenomenon in intermediate Latin American cities.
Eco-design approach on a university campus: MSKU outdoor cinema and activity area
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, 2023-01-03) Koca, Feray; Kahyaoğlu, Mehmet Rifat; Beyhan, Burak
Social-ecological systems evolve in cycles of ecological adaptation increasing the resilience of places. The aim of this article is to present the design and implementation processes of the Outdoor Cinema and Activity Area Project which are applied on one of the valley floors in Mugla Sitki Koçman University’s Main Campus. The project was carried out by using the eco-design approach as the method of design and planning based on the concepts of panarchy and transect having roots in the studies of Patrick Geddes. The criteria adopted for the design of the project area were determined by the survey-analysis-design process within the framework of the opportunities offered by the land in the interaction of nature and human beings. In line with the basic design criteria, the application phase of the project was completed and the Outdoor Cinema and Activity Area were put into service.
In Cuenca (Ecuador), the street naming practice continues to be a controversial issue as part of its development as a city and in the proposal of public policies. This work analyzes the nomenclatures of the city streets using information visualization as a critical tool. Through an interdisciplinary methodology, which includes critical-historical analysis, gender perspective, and information visualization, this article shows the categorization process for the classification of streets in the urban area of Cuenca. The proposed graphics and interactive maps—six in total—allow a reading of the categories by their statistical content, geolocation, or length, among other parameters. In this sense, the role played by data visualization as a communication tool makes possible new narratives and ways of seeing the city.
