Biological occupational accidents with sharps devices represent a relevant concern for nursing staff, due to the high prevalence and impact on morbidity and mortality, as a result of the transmission of infectious diseases like Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis and Human Papilloma, caused by the use of needles, syringes, scalpels and other sharp objects, which when handled inappropriately represent a significant risk for such staff, most of these events occur during user care due to direct exposure. The most frequent causes are: lack of training, updating and education on procedures for handling sharps equipment, conditions of the work area and professional and non-professional behavior. Updating knowledge, preventive measures and adequate management of biosafety devices and protocols are the key to reducing the incidence of biological accidents.
