    Prevalencia y factores de riesgo asociados a depresión infantil en niños/as de treinta escuelas rurales, Cuenca 2011

    Background: A descriptive was of conducted of a transversal cut of prevalence and risk factors associated with childhood depression in boys and girls from thirty rural schools from Cuenca 2011 Objective: To determine the prevalence and to identify the risk factors associated with depressive behavior in boys and girls from thirty schools belonging to eleven rural parishes from the city of Cuenca, enrolled in the semester of 2010-2011. Materials and Methods: Materials and Methods: Of 10718 elementary school boys and girls from the fifth, sixth, and 7th year from the rural schools of Cuenca 2011, a sample was taken of 751 children which were randomly signed to two groups of students conducting the thesis (n1=376 and n2=375), corresponding to 376 boys and girls. For the recollection of data, a previously validated form was utilized. The information gathered was entered into the Excel program and analyzed in the SPSS 15.0 program the evaluation version. Results: In the studied population the childhood prevalence is of 10.64% (n=40 cases), demonstrating the diagnosis of severe childhood depression in 27 boys y 13 girls, the average age was 10 years old and the factors associated with this are: family dysfunctional (19 cases, p = 0.000000065), nuclear families (married parents 14 cases, p = 0.00002), level grade (seventh grade, 17 cases, p = 0.0109), person with who lives (only with mother, 18 cases, p = 0.0013) and emigration (non- emigrants: 18 cases, p = 0.0413).
