Perspectives of Ecuadorean teachers and students on the importance of addressing comprehensive sexuality education
(2020) Castillo Núñez, Jessica Ercilia; Derluyn, Ilse; Jerves Hermida, Elena Monserrath; Valcke, Martin
Building on the well-recognised relevance of alignment processes in schools, this study aimed to explore the relationship between the perspectives of teachers and students on the relative importance of addressing comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) in Ecuadorian schools. A survey of 353 teachers and 780 students attending the same schools revealed that teachers attributed greater importance to CSE compared to students. Inferential analysis suggests that the perceptions of the teachers and students on the importance of addressing CSE in school are largely aligned with regards to the dimensions of gender roles, sexual rights, diversity and relationships. In contrast, their perceptions are less aligned with regards to the dimensions of sexual health, violence and pleasure. These findings have implications for enhancing comprehensive sexuality education in Ecuadorian schools. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Student teachers' cognitions to integrate comprehensive sexuality education into their future teaching practices in Ecuador
(2019) Castillo Núñez, Jessica Ercilia; Valcke, Martin; Derluyn, Ilse
Student teachers play a crucial role in the future implementation of sexuality education. In Spanish-speaking contexts however, research on this topic is scarce, especially regarding student teachers’ perspectives towards their implementation of sexuality education. This study examines the association between Ecuadorean student teachers' cognitions towards Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), and how this interacts with their gender, previous education and subject and their behavioural intention to implement CSE. Analysis of data from N = 141 student teachers, showed that positive attitudes and high self-efficacy beliefs are significantly associated with behavioural intention to teach CSE. Implications for teacher education and further research are discussed. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

The (mis)match between sexuality education programs in school and the expectations of Ecuadorian adolescents
(2019) Castillo Núñez, Jessica Ercilia; Valcke, Martin; Derluyn, Ilse
Considering the relevance of adolescents’ voices in the design and implementation of sexuality education programs, the current study explores adolescents’ perceptions of ongoing sexuality education they are receiving at school (SSE) and perceptions about their teachers’ professionalism towards this topic (SEPT) in Ecuador. A multi-stage stratified cluster sampling procedure was followed to involve 702 adolescents between 11 and 19 years old in the study. Participants perceptions of SSE and SEPT were assessed based on a Likert scale survey encompassing 15 closed and 4 open questions. Responses were analyzed in relation to their gender, parental migration status, age and geographical location. Adolescents expressed high satisfaction with sexuality education received at school (SSE) and were mildly satisfied about their teachers’ competences regarding sexuality education (SEPT). Multinomial logistic regression analyses revealed slight differences in relation to the socio-demographic variables. Answers to open-ended questions reflected a strong influence of a biological approach on sexuality education. Given the satisfaction levels in SSE and SEPT, and the contrasts between the biological approach and the overarching Ecuadorian framework, the results have clear implications for the design and implementation of future sexuality education programs and training teacher proposals.
