(2014) Ochoa Castro, Fernando Ezequiel; Valarezo Villavicencio, Karen Michelle; Muñoz Avilés, Cleaveland Oswaldo
In this study we show the relationship of intellectual disability and the preva-lence of cavities in children, the sample is 130 children: 65 children from "NOVA" Learning Center who had intellectual disability (case studies) and 65 healthy children from the "Liceo Decroliano" (group of control); a dental clinical examination was performed with ICDAS index, Silness index, and Loe modified criteria, and surveys were applied regarding oral hygiene, the results were analyzed with the X2 test. A higher prevalence of cavities in the group of witnesses was found with an X2 of 6,923, statistically significant. The code caries more often than was found in this study was 03 ICDAS Code occlusal, and Code 02 in vestibular ICDAS in the case group (children with intellectual disabilities) and in the group of controls (children without intellectual disability) The presence of dental cavities in children with mental disabilities was lower than in children without disabilities. (71% for the case studies and 89% for the group of control), but disability is a risk factor for the development of den-tal cavities. Tooth brushing aid was influential in preventing tooth decay. Plaque is not the only influential factor for tooth decay.
