Item Revoques finos de tierra para fachadas, uso del carbón y grafito como pigmentos innovadores(Universidad de Cuenca, 2025-08-27) Cuesta Vásquez, Andy Joel; Vacacela Cango, Luis Adan; Pesántez Pesántez, José FranciscoEarthen plasters have been used by various cultures throughout history. However, their use has significantly declined in recent times due to a lack of technical knowledge regarding their properties, applications, durability, and feasibility. This limitation has restricted their incorporation in construction and restoration projects, despite representing a sustainable alternative to the environmental impact caused by conventional construction methods. In this context, the present research aims to develop a series of fine earthen finishes for walls, evaluating both their technical performance and exploring aesthetic finishing options. To achieve this, different types of earth were selected—one from the southern region of Ecuador (Austro) and another from a commonly available commercial source—chosen based on both bibliographic review and empirical analysis. These soil samples were stabilized using additives to improve their durability and appearance, and natural pigments such as graphite and charcoal were added. The best-performing plasters were then subjected to abrasion and stain resistance tests, in accordance with INEN NTE standards, to assess their behavior under wear and environmental exposure. As a result, a technical sample catalog was developed, presenting various combinations of soil, pigments, and application techniques. This catalog is intended to guide professionals in the implementation of more ecological construction solutions. Ultimately, this proposal seeks to promote the conscious use of natural materials and contribute to the revival of traditional techniques, adapted to the current challenges of sustainable architecture.
