This article presents the results of an analysis of the traits affecting entrepreneurial activity and the evaluation of the aspects that promote the entrepreneurial spirit and the sustainability of small to medium-sized businesses in the city of Cuenca. The analysis focused on external and internal factors, favoring and hindering the entrepreneurial process, respectively financing, market conditions and legal framework, and the level of education, entrepreneurial and motivational behavior. Data was collected via a descriptive cross-sectional survey, applied to 200 businesses, gathering general information about the manager, and the factors affecting entrepreneurship and company sustainability. The authors expect that the results of the survey will positively enhance the discussion between public, non-governmental and private actors and instructors on key policies stimulating the emergence of new enterprises and the strengthening of existing ones.

Given that high demand for animal protein is expected to the world in a few years, we need to take extra measures to improve the efficiency of the sources of supply of these proteins, particularly meat and milk. Biotechnologies of animal reproduction acquire a prime importance in these improvements for their productive impact. As part of these biotechnologies, timed artificial insemination (TAI) has grown exponentially in the Mercosur, which has markedly increased in the proportion of females inseminated in relation to these that are able to be breeding. This has also been marked in beef cattle where almost 80% of the females are inseminated. This improves not only the genetic level of the herds but also contributes directly and significantly in the productivity of these herds. This strong increase in demand has also led to an increase in the quality of the treatments carried out, have better defined the moments to do insemination and because of this, a great increase in fertility of the cows inseminated after these treatments. The other biotechnology that has changing the level of efficiency of cattle production is the use of sexed semen. This is of particular interest in dairy cattle and its great increase in recent years has allowed the improvement in several aspects what has made their increase daily. In short, the recent massive incorporation of new technologies and management systems (semen sexing, handling time of AI, TAI) have promoted and contributed to its expansion both in beef and milk cattle allowing to significantly improving productivity.

Young children in Ecuador show high prevalence of chronic zinc deficiency, associated with a decline in cellular and humoral immunity, and increased risk of tooth decay. The research reported in this paper presents the effect of the daily consumption of 10 mg zinc sulfate versus the control group receiving a solution with an inactive substance during 42 weeks, on respectively the children’s weight, height, the immunoglobulin A (IgA) concentration in saliva, the plasma concentrations of zinc, and the indices of Klein and Palmer (DMFT and DMFS). In the survey special attention was given to the detection of early stage tooth decay, also called incipient decay. Parallel, information about the children’s hygiene and living condition was collected using structured questionnaires. Statistical analysis of the collected data revealed that DMFS is less and the final concentration of plasma zinc higher in the experimental group of children receiving daily a zinc supplement (17,30 ± 9,55 vs. 20,03 ± 10,74; p = 0,032; 123 ± 24,29 μg dl-1 vs. 105,57 ± 15,75 μg dl-1; p < 0,001).

The article presents the compilation of ocean-atmospheric data in order to increase hit rates in weather forecasting. The project consists in the design of a self-sustaining prototype, able to acquire meteorological data using temperature and humidity sensors coupled to a data acquisition system, that transmit measurements to a PC by means of a microcontroller system and wireless communication system based on MIMO. For the real-time monitoring and managing graphical programming software is used. In addition to the existing systems, the self-sustaining prototype provides contingency plans to prevent possible damage to material property, will benefit the institutions in charge of monitoring meteorological variables, helps the prevention of calamities.

The free flow occurs when the liquid flows by gravity and only partially confined by a solid circle. In the prediction of the flow variables for different conditions is of great importance to develop hydrodynamic models and numerical simulations with adequate precision to allow proper planning of works. We have studied the use of analytical models in solving phenomena fluid mechanics, which are based on the laws of conservation of mass, momentum and energy. Depending on the degree of simplification that can be reached while maintaining the level of accuracy and verify what good behavior modeled on the nature, there are one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional hydrodynamic schemes. A confluence is a complex adaptive convergence since complicated flow parameters produce fluids movement. In this paper the formulation, solution methods and methodologies for developing overall physical and mathematical models for free surface flows is presented. For this study the confluence of the La Cañada stream and Suquía River both of the City of Córdoba.

Integration and massive storage of hydro-meteorological data combining big data & semantic web technologies
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2015) Tello, Andrés; Freire, Renán; Espinoza, Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Universidad de Cuenca; Dirección de Investigación de la Universidad de Cuenca
Ecuador contains an immense collection of hydro-meteorological data, informing us via standards how to locate and invoke them. If we want to make such data easier to understand and use, we need to store them in a common repository and annotate them by means of descriptive metadata. This paper proposes an approach for the massive storage, integration and semantic annotation of hydro-meteorological data using an open source integration container, NoSQL databases and Semantic Web technologies. The main contributions of this paper are: i) a shared common repository of hydro-meteorological data, ii) automatic semantic annotation to formally describe the data sources, and iii) efficient mechanisms for searching and retrieving hydro meteorological data.

In the lower basin of Guayas, more in particular in the wetland area, the rice is cultivated on 350.000 ha. An area of 100 km2, covering both sides of the tributary river Babahoyo, situated in the cantons Samborondón and Yaguachi, was selected to study the presence of heavy metals in the top soil and plants. Soil samples were collected in 26 sites, whereas plants were sampled in 5 sampling stations. The concentration of heavy metals in the top soil was related to soil edaphological properties and the concentration in the rice plants, using multivariate analysis. At each site 12 variables were measured resulting over the 26 sites in the following average values: MO 4%, clay 32,7%, loam 49,8%, sand 17,5%, pH 6,6, CE 7,9 mS m-1, metal concentration in mg kg-1 Cu 48,8, Fe 8.734, Mn 343, Zn 34, Hg not detected, Cd 0,15 y Pb 4,4. Statistical analysis revealed that 40,7% of the spatial variability in heavy metals in the top soil is explained by the first two principal components, loam and clay (CP1) and clay and cadmium (CP2). In addition, the 26 sites could be grouped in 6 distinct classes at an euclidian distance of 3,22. Based on the concentration the heavy metals in the top soil rank from high to low as follows: Fe > Mn > Cu > Zn > Pb > Cd and Hg not detected. The concentration of lead in the sites where also the lead concentration was measured in the rice plants, 5 locations in total, ranged
