This research was developed on four cattle farms in the province of Azuay, Ecuador with the objective of evaluating two dehorning techniques (with and without disbudding), combined with local anesthesia and systematic analgesia, on pain management, wound healing, and zootechnical parameters. Thirty-one calves were distributed into four treatments: T1 (anesthesia without disbudding), T2 (anesthesia with disbudding), T3 (anesthesia + analgesia without disbudding), and T4 (anesthesia + analgesia with disbudding). Physiological parameters, algometric measurements, pain-related behaviors, wound healing progression, body weight, and height were evaluated at five intervals throughout a 30-day period." The results demonstrated that the use of systemic analgesia, especially in the T3 treatment, showed an optimal balance between animal welfare, reduced pain-related behaviors, and accelerated the wound healing process, evidencing a shorter wound healing time without compromising growth or body weight. Although T4 also showed benefits, T3 was superior due to more efficient healing and lower pain sensitivity. In conclusion, the T3 protocol proved to be the most effective, as it demonstrated an optimal balance between animal welfare and production efficiency. This study supports the combined use of local anesthesia and systemic analgesia in dehorning procedures, contributing to the development of more humane and productive livestock practices.
