Item Evaluación del nivel de atención, en niños y niñas del primer año de educación básica, establecimientos urbanos del cantón Cuenca, 2010-2011(2011-11-11) Mora León, Zoila Jakeline; Toral Galarza, Margarita Rosa; Huiracocha Tutivén, Mirian Sofía; Auquilla Díaz, Nancy EulaliaThis research evidenced attention problems in kindergarten children in classrooms of city schools in Cuenca. Then an intervention plan focused in concentration and memory exercises was systematized. 300 out of 4,959 students registered for the school year 2010 – 2011 were evaluated between April and May 2011 by using CONNERS©, EDAH©, and DSM-IV© scales. The presumptive diagnosis was based on the observation of the school environment. The teachers helped record the conducts repeated in the diagnosis mentioned before. The data obtained by the records were then analyzed statistically by using the SPSS© program; later, an incidence factor in our city was established, and the intervention plan mentioned before, was recommended. The type of study to describe the characteristics of attention was observational, descriptive, and quantitative; the dependent variables were age, sex, and parents’ schooling; and additional analysis variables were the type of school and the existence of a department of psychology. This process evidenced that from the group analyzed, that is, students of 27 schools, 49 students presented problems of inattention. This represented 16.3% of the sample. 55 suspect infants, 18.3% of the sample, were not included in the previous percentage. Consequently, a high level of inattention and a poor intervention to treat the problem was confirmed. Therefore, it was recommended to confirm or deny the presumptive diagnosis of the first group of children by specialist, preferably, a neuropsychologist or a neuropediatrician, as well as to analyze if the second group of children has enough indicators to experience such condition in the future. In spite of the fact that most schools have a department of psychology, students are not diagnosed nor treated appropriately.
