Item Prevalencia de recesiones gingivales mediante la clasificación de Cairo y Miller en estudiantes de pregrado de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Cuenca en el año 2018(2018) Sisalima Jara, John Patricio; Alvarado Cordero, Jacinto JoséBackground: Gingival recession is defined as the apical shift of the gingival margin with respect to the cementoenamel junction. One of the challenges faced by the oral health professional is the precise diagnosis of the presence or absence of gingival recessions. Objective: To determine the prevalence of gingival recession through Cairo and Miller classification in undergraduate students of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Cuenca. Materials and Methods: A descriptive-analytical study was carried out. A total of 388 students were analyzed and the prevalence of gingival recessions was determined with both methods and their relationship with demographic variables and periodontal phenotype. The relationship between recessions and variables was evaluated using the chi-square test and Odds Ratio (OR). Results: The prevalence of gingival recession was 47.21% with the Miller diagnostic method and 50.16% with the Cairo diagnostic method. There was a statistically significant association between gingival recession and age group of 25 to 34 years (p= 0.004Miller and p= 0.02Cairo) (OR= 2.86Miller and OR = 3.41Cairo), masculine gender (p= 0.028Miller and p= 0.11Cairo) (OR= 1.67Miller and OR= 1.45Cairo) and periodontal phenotype (p= 0.05Miller and p= 0.04Cairo) (OR= 2.28 Miller and OR= 2.42Cairo). Conclusions: When comparing prevalence between the Miller and Cairo diagnostic methods, it was found that the Cairo diagnostic method is more effective in detecting gingival recessions since it can be used to diagnose recessions in vestibular surfaces and palatal / lingual surfaces
