The present study identified the consequences of family abandonment in institutionalized older adults of the gerontological center of Hogar Miguel Leon and in non-institutionalized older adults of the Club de la Virgen de la Visitación of the GAD Parroquial of Sinincay. It is a descriptive research that allowed us to know the situation of these two vulnerable groups. For the collection of information, a sociodemographic survey, the Hamilton anxiety test and the Yesagave depression test were applied to a sample of 46 older adults in the care of Cuenca; the analysis of the data was carried out in the computer program SPSS. The results show that the institutionalized and non-institutionalized elderly people have a deterioration in the affective and psychological area, mainly evidencing the feelings of: abandonment, melancholy, sadness, irritability, depression and anxiety; being the non-institutionalized elderly the most affected. In conclusion, to eradicate the abandonment rate and promote mental health in our city's elderly, the family must be prepared from an early age for the phenomenon of aging.
