Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a viral disease of great economic importance in global pig production, as it causes severe reproductive failure and respiratory problems in pigs of all ages, particularly in piglets, which triggers an increase in mortality and an affectation of productive parameters in general. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of PRRS in the Piñas canton, El Oro province, to understand the impact of the disease on local pig production. The study included 71 farms spread over 8 parishes; oral fluid (FO) samples were taken from the population according to strata, including breeding herd, piglets, and fattening. The samples were analyzed using ELISA IDEXX PRRS Oral Fluids Ab Kit (IDEXX Laboratories) at the microbiology laboratory of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Cuenca. The results showed a general prevalence of 60.74% at the level of the Piñas canton; the parishes with the highest prevalence were: Piñas Grande (83.33%) and Saracay (70.06%); the parishes with the lowest prevalence were: Piedras (40%) and San Roque (25%), while Capiro had no positive cases. The risk factors associated with the presence of the disease were also investigated, through the application of a structured survey; resulting in six factors: commercial purpose, number of sites, the origin of semen, the provenance of replacements, quarantine, and management of delivery waste; were related to the PRRS presentation.
