(2015) Arévalo Polo, Christian Santiago; Sarmiento Abril, Bryant Stephen; Jerves Andrade, María de Lourdes
Methicillin – resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA is a kind of strain of Staphylococcus and has become resistant to different kinds of antibiotics, which has been penicillin the first antibiotic to be resistant, and methicillin. The students of the Biochemistry and pharmacy career at Universidad de Cuenca College, a population which has been in a constantly contact with Methicillin – resistant Staphylococcus aureus, could be an excellent storage for this bacterium and it could be a potential risk for the family and other people, knowing this bacterium is the cause of different clinical pictures. This research about the MRSA prevalence was carried out at the microbiology laboratory at the chemistry science faculty at Universidad de Cuenca College, located in Avenida 12 de Abril Street and Agustin Cueva Street. The number of persons who cooperated in this research was 100 students of the faculty, which they all assisted to the laboratory for sampling, and fulfill with the inclusion criteria. In this research we could notice that the 29% of the student samples were bearer of Staphylococcus aureus. Performing the disc sensibility test, using different antibiotics as cefoxitin (30 µg) and penicillin (10 units), to determine the methicillin resistance, and we could establish that the 10% of the students had methicillin Staphylococcus aureus in the nasopharynx.
