Psychological control and self-concept in adolescents have become a research topic of worldwide interest. However, few studies have been carried out in our Ecuadorian contexts. Therefore, the aim of this quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional and correlational study is to determine the influence of parental psychological control strategies, identify the perception of adolescents according to their sex, and determine the dimensions of self-concept. For data collection, one hundred and twenty participants from the Misioneros Oblatos, Ciudad de Cuenca and Fray Vicente Solano Schools took the Psychological Control Scale-Youth Self-Report scale and the Self-concept scale Form 5. Results revealed that both fathers´ and the mothers’ psychological control was manifested mainly by manipulation tactics. Mothers use greater psychological control over adolescent girls through manipulation tactics and disrespect. Additionally, self-concept had a higher prevalence in adolescents. There is a negative correlation with the dimension of physical self-concept regarding the fathers´ and mothers’ influence of psychological control tactics. In conclusion, data show that there is no significant influence of psychological control tactics on the dimensions of self-concept in adolescents.
