Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the result of the balance between the production and elimination of aqueous humor within the eyeball. Rebound tonometry measures IOP and allows early diagnosis and proper treatment of eye diseases, mainly: glaucoma or uveitis. Basal IOP values can vary due to intrinsic factors such as age, sex or breed of the dog and extrinsic factors such as: altitude or atmospheric pressure of the environment taken from meters above sea level (m.a.s.l). The objective of this study is to evaluate IOP using a tonometer (Tonovet Plus ®️) in adult dogs between 2 to 6 years without ocular alterations in two altitude floors (2525msnm and 319msnm). We included 45 healthy dogs from two cities of Ecuador and grouped according to sex and size. IOP values of the right eye (IOPRE) and IOP of the left eye (IOPLE) were analyzed separately. A positive correlation of 0.71 was found between IOPRE and IOPLE. The mean IOP of the right eye was 20.72 ± 2.34 mmHg (mean ± SD) and the IOP in left eye was 20.33 ± 2.68 mmHg (mean ± SD). IOP at 2525 masl was 21.84±0.32 (mean±S.E.), while at 319 masl was 19.55±0.31 (mean±S.E.). The IOP of the dogs evaluated in our study is statistically significant and is related to the altitude floor (P<0.05), however, there is no differences in relation to sex or size. Our study showed that there is a direct relationship between IOP and altitude, with a difference of almost 2mmHg between altitude floors.
