The cooperative sector in Ecuador has undergone significant changes over the years, subject to regulations and regulatory bodies created to exert greater control over entities within this sector. In Latin America, specifically in Ecuador, savings and credit cooperatives have been recognized for their assets and effective financial management. Therefore, this study focuses on the top three savings and credit cooperatives in Ecuador, also the largest in Latin America according to the DGRV (Deutscher Genossenschafts- und Raiffeisenverband e.V. - German Cooperative and Raiffeisen Confederation), in order to evaluate them financially using the CAMEL method for the period 2018 to 2022. The evaluation applies key indicators such as Capital adequacy, Asset quality, Management quality, Earnings, and Liquidity to provide guidance for strengthening financial management and promoting sustainability within the cooperative environment. The results obtained from the CAMEL methodology highlight and confirm the information provided by the German Cooperative Confederation at the Latin American level, positioning Cooperativa Juventud Ecuatoriana Progresista, Cooperativa Jardín Azuayo, and Cooperativa de la Policía Nacional as the three largest and most significant in Ecuador. This indicates they comply with required regulations and maintain stable financial health, committed to their members. Nevertheless, periodic financial evaluations are necessary to maintain an accurate view of the economic and financial status of savings and credit cooperatives for effective decision-making and their continued growth.
