Objective: To determine the relationship between congestive heart failure with risk factors in patients older than 45 years admitted to the Internal Medicine Department Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital in 2011. Methods: A case-control study, matched by sex and place of residence. The sample size was calculated on the basis of 95% confidence, 80% statistical power, OR 3 and 15 % prevalence of obesity, was studied 1 case per two controls. Data were collected and analyzed directly in the software SPSS 15. Results: We studied 61 cases and 122 controls. The groups were similar in sex and place of residence. The mean age of the group was 64.98 ± 14.6 and 54.4% male. The frequency of hypertension in cases was 85.2 % and 30.3 % controls (OR = 13.2, CI = 5.9 - 29.7, p = 0.000). The inactivity rate was 93.4 % cases and 77.8 % in controls with one (OR = 4.0 CI = 1.3 - 12.1, p = 0.014). Obesity, overweight, mixed dyslipidemia, smoking, and family history of cardiovascular disease were not significantly different (p = 0.749, 0.827, 0.751, 0.816, 0.616 respectively). Conclusion: Hypertension and inactivity are risk factors for heart failure. KEYWORDS: HEART FAILURE, HYPERTENSION ARTERIAL, MIXED DYSLIPIDEMIA, OBESITY, OVERWEIGHT, SMOKING, FAMILY HISTORY OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
