In open channels with high slopes, a significant increase in flow velocities is observed due to the pronounced inclination of the bed, impacting the sediment transport capacity and erosion of the bed and walls of the channel, resulting in a reduction in channel stability and require control measures. To address these challenges, specific solutions are used such as rapid staggered, artificial roughness blocks or use of deflectors. In this study, the influence of type A artificial roughness on the flow is analyzed through field tests, based on experiments carried out by Professor F. I. Pikalov in 1935; parameters such as flow rate and slope are varied in order to compare the effectiveness of the use of this proposed roughness respect to theoretical models. The implementation of Type A roughness in the Balzay multipurpose channel has made it possible to obtain an equation that has been compared with an equation formulated by Pikalov, having a coefficient of determination of 0.89, considering as close fit to real data. Additionally, the variability between the results obtained in this study and those derived form a physical model in laboratory channels and a numerical model has been identified.
