Background: cranial intraventricular hemorrhage is one of the most common pathologies in low-weight premature infants. In Latin America, the frequency of this serious pathology has increased. Objective: to determine the characteristics of cranial intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants admitted to the neonatology service of the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital during the 2018-2019 period. Methods and materials: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in 54 premature infants diagnosed with intraventricular hemorrhage. The information was obtained using a previously validated form. The analysis was performed with frequencies, percentages and average. The association between maternal and newborn characteristics is determined with OR with a 95% CI. Statistical analysis was performed in Excel V.2016 and SPSS V.22. Result: of 54 neonates with HIVC, 53.7% are male; 31.4% were late preterm infants, 7.4% were of adequate birth weight, and about 50% had normal APGAR. 70% were born by cesarean section. More than 50% presented respiratory failure and underwent lung maturation; 35.1% presented moderate and mild clinical manifestations. 35% presented grade 1 HIVC. Elderly mothers (p = 0.00), caesarean section (p = 0.01) and clinical manifestations (p = 0.00) statistically significant statistics associated with HIVC, while APGAR (p = 0.03) and having no complications (p = 0.01) they are statistically associated with minor bleeding (grade 1 and 2). Conclusions: neonates who presented HIVC grade 1 and 2, developed fewer complications in relation to grade 3 and 4.
