Item Diseño y construcción de un prototipo a escala de laboratorio de una celda electroquímica de flujo redox de vanadio para almacenamiento de energía solar(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-08-29) López Ullauri, Crhistian Israel; Poma Tene, Jhonatan Alexandro; Montero Izquierdo, Iván Andrés; Villa Ávila, Edisson AndrésIn Ecuador, there are various projects for the implementation of renewable energy generation systems, and photovoltaic systems are one of them. These systems are susceptible to poor production due to their dependence on the climatic conditions of the installation zone. Energy storage systems (ESS) present themselves as a solution to this problem, as they can store excess energy and supply the grid during low demand periods. Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB) are ideal for this purpose due to their easy handling, maintenance, large storage capacity, recyclability, low environmental impact, and long lifespan. In this study, a vanadium electrochemical cell based on acrylic with a capacity of 200 mL for an electrolytic solution of 0.35 M total vanadium in 2.24 M sulfuric acid, 26.8 cm2 graphite felts as electrodes, which were subjected to prior thermal and chemical treatment, and Nafion® 115 as an ionic exchange membrane was designed and built. This cell has a theoretical energy storage capacity of 0.52 Ah. The construction of this electrochemical cell was carried out to evaluate its feasibility for implementation in photovoltaic energy generation systems and its subsequent energy storage. The cell was operated under charging conditions, simulating energy supply through solar panels and galvanostatic (constant current) charging, determining its maximum charge states, charge capacities, and coulombic, voltage, and energy efficiencies in the two charge-discharge cycles for both modes of operation. The charging processes were carried out in the Micro-Red laboratory located on the Balzay campus of the Universidad de Cuenca.
