Personality encompasses the patterns of behavior, thought and emotion that make up a unique identity. However, it can be altered by substances such as substance use or criminal behavior, which significantly modifies the personality and increases the propensity to criminal activities. Under these considerations, the study aimed to associate the relationship between personality traits, substance use and crime typology in the male penitentiary population in the social rehabilitation center of Azogues during the period 2024. The research involved 30 inmates, of legal age, serving sentences for: possession and carrying of weapons, robbery and substance trafficking. The instruments used in the research included the PAI personality assessment inventory and the ASSIST alcohol, tobacco and substance use assessment questionnaire. The findings of the study determined that the prevalent personality traits in the prison population were; alcohol problems, drug problems and antisocial traits, which, together with the use of substances such as cannabis, alcohol and opiates promote crimes such as carrying weapons, theft and substance trafficking. However, the correlation between the variable’s personality traits, substance use and crime typology was not found to be significant.
