Actinic cheilitis: clinical, pathological and therapeutic considerations
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2021-06-06) Pinos Gavilanes, María Paz; Pinos Gavilanes, Daniel Esteban; Bravo Calderón, Diego Mauricio
cheilitis (AC) is a chronic inflammation that affects more frequently to the lower lip and is considered as a potentially malignant disorder that could develop into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). AC is caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, mainly sunlight radiation. Fair-skinned male patients, older than 50 years, who have worked outdoors or have had long-term sunlight exposure are more susceptible to develop this lesion. Their clinical manifestations are very varied; nevertheless, they are not related to the histopathological alterations that can be found. Histopathological diagnosis is the most important predictive factor of malignant transformation, depending on the severity of epithelial dysplasia. The characteristics of the AC are reviewed, so the clinician can provide optimal care to the patient and prevent lip cancer. The literature review was performed analyzing articles from PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and Cochrane databases.

Prevalencia del defecto de stafne en los Centros Radiológicos de las facultades de Odontología de la ciudad de Cuenca
(2016) Pinos Gavilanes, Daniel Esteban; Ulloa Wilches, Ana Liz; Bravo Calderón, Diego Mauricio
The Stafne bone defect is an asymptomatic radiolucent entity of the mandibular bone that was first described by Edward Stafne in 1942 and is easily confused with cysts and odontogenic tumors. Additionally, we did not find information related to its frequency in our population, hence the present study analyzed the prevalence of this defect at the radiological centers of the Dentistry Schools in the city of Cuenca, which are important dental care centers. Demographic and radiological data were obtained from the retrospective analysis of 4265 panoramic radiographs, which were observed by investigators who were previously calibrated using Cohen's Kappa coefficient. In agreement with the worldwide prevalence of this entity, the present study found four patients with this defect (0.1%), one of which was bilateral and the other three were in the right mandible. In addition, no predominance was found for a specific sex since the cases discovered belonged in the same way for males as for the females. Therefore, the present study provides information of the defect to professionals and students for future investigations
