Características de la hemorragia subaracnoidea no traumática en el Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga en los años Enero de 2012 a Diciembre 2016. Cuenca. Ecuador
(2019) Crespo Díaz, Francisco Andrés; Soria Vega, Brian Xavier; Piedra Bravo, Luis Mario; García Alvear, Jorge Luis
Background.- Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has an approximate incidence of 9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, mortality is between 30 to 50 percent approximately. In Ecuador until 2014, there were 484 cases with a slight predominance in females and in persons over 65 years of age. Objective.- Determine the most frequent characteristics of non-traumatic SAH in the Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga, in the period between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016. Methodology.- It is a retrospective descriptive quantitative study of 123 cases with diagnosis of non-traumatic Subarachnoid Hemorrhage; the information of the hospital's computer system (AS 400) was used, making forms in Microsoft Word 2016 and processed in SPSS v23.0. The analysis was elaborated using frequencies, percentages, rates and standard deviation. Results.- Of the 123 patients observed, 56.91% were women, 24.39% were between 51 and 60 years old, and the urban population corresponded to 65.04%. The aneurysmal etiology corresponded to 52.85%, the main symptom being the alteration of consciousness (74%), followed by headache (72.4%); the majority of patients presented Hunt and Hess grades I-II-III. The mortality was 38.21%. Mortality in relation to the Glasgow, Hunt and Hess scales and Fisher data gave p <0.05. Conclusion.- The SAH is more frequent in the female sex with an age range between 51 and 60 years, the predominant etiology was aneurysm and a mortality of 38.21%

Compressive myelopathy secondary to spinal neurocysticercosis stablished by polymerase chain reaction
(2019) Piedra Bravo, Luis Mario; Lopez Aguilera, Nelson; Figueroa Martinez, Domenica Alejandra; Molina Pinos, Elsa Mishel
Neurocysticercosis is an endemic parasitic disease in several regions of the world. The spinal form is rare and its diagnosis is complex due to the clinical variability and the poor performance of the available additional tests. In this paper, we describe the case of a 34-year-old male patient who presented compressive myelopathy secondary to spinal neurocysticercosis confirmed by polymerase chain reaction and histopathology report. The patient was successfully treated with decompressive surgery. We discuss the clinical aspects, the usefulness of diagnostic tools —including polymerase chain reaction—, and the therapeutic options available for the treatment of spinal neurocysticercosis. © 2018 Sociedad Neurológica Argentina
