    Prevalencia de depresión y factores asociados en el adulto mayor en la parroquia de Cañaribamba, cuenca 2013

    INTRODUCTION: Depression is a disorder that affects the health of the elderly as well as diseases such as: hypertension, diabetes, arthropathy, tumors, they can coexist and exacerbate their symptoms. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of depression in the elderly and associated factors in Cañaribamba parish of the city of Cuenca. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 300 adults over the Cañaribamba parish, data were collected through surveys with application of validated Yesavage scale for Depression. The information was processed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel 2010 software; frequencies, percentages, mean and SD were used, and for association RP (C 95%.) RESULTS: The prevalence of depression was 14.7% with a mean age of 73.7 years; with 66.7% of women, 40% married; Factors associated with depression were elderly, those without occupation of 1.9 times more than the ones that possess. (95% CI 1.1-3.4), the likelihood of depression by living alone was 1.9 times (95% CI 1.08 to 3.3), more than the living accompanied, diabetes 1.8 times more than those who had not (95% CI 1.06 to 3.1), Cerebrovascular Event (CVD) and cancers 2.4 more times than those without (95% CI 1.2 to 5). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of depression in the geriatric population of Cañaribamba was lower than reported internationally and is associated with factors such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancers.
