Item Valoración de bajo peso, sobrepeso y obesidad de los niños/as de la Escuela Luis Serrano Arévalo , de la parroquia Sidcay del cantón Cuenca 2011.(2012) Pesántez Carmona, Mélida Carmita; Morales Ortega, María Graciela; Palomeque Saquicela, Ximena Alexandra; Patiño Encalada, Celia Marina; Cabrera Cárdenas, Carmen LucíaThis research aims to determine the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity in children / as School "Luis Serrano Arévalo" Sidcay parish of Cuenca Canton during the academic year 2011. Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study allowed us to determine the prevalence of malnutrition of children / school as Luis Serrano Arévalo Cuenca Canton. The study group consisted of 45 children / as of 6-14 years are from second to seventh year of basic education "Luis Serrano Arévalo" School of Sidcay parish of the canton Cuenca. Being small universe worked with all children / as. The research techniques used were the interview, by applying the form in order to assess the nutritional status, educational level, occupational activity, socioeconomic status, housing characteristics, etc., the anthropometric children / as by making weight and height. For processing and data analysis formulas Nelson, percentiles weight / age, height / age, body mass index BMI was used as the growth curve of the NCHS. Data were processed and analyzed using Microsoft Office, Word, Excel. Results: The results of the investigation determined that of the 45 children / study participants as 46.6% men and 53.3% women, between nutritional problems encountered are: underweight 13.3%, 17.8% overweight, obesity in 8.9% and 60.0% had normal weight; low height for age at 15.6%; whereas in assessing BMI is 13.3% according to the table below the 25th percentile, 17.8% between 75 to 90 percentile and 8.9% on the 90th. Conclusions: nutritional problems as underweight are associated with impaired quality of life, manifested by low wages, inadequate housing, lack of nutrients; and overweight and obesity associated with the consumption of high-calorie, low education hipercarbonada and diet were also found. Which will impact on health later with chronic diseases. Nutritional problems found in children are related to poor family socioeconomic status, level of satisfaction, showing causation nutritional problem - socioeconomic status.
