(Universidad de Cuenca, 2025-07-21) Coronel Pangol, Erika Noelia; Ortiz Quinteros, Jennifer Paola; Morocho Malla, Manuel Ismael
Different investigations in different parts of the world have found a direct relationship between depression with type 2 diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension, demonstrating its impact on the patient's quality of life, which makes it necessary to establish both the prevalence and the association of factors between these morbidities. The general objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of depression and associated factors in patients with type II diabetes mellitus and hypertension attending the University of Cuenca Medical Specialties Center. A cross-sectional analytical study was carried out, applying a questionnaire that was developed and validated by the authors, and the PHQ-9 test was also applied to determine the prevalence of depression. The sample consisted of 386 patients diagnosed with diabetes and arterial hypertension over a period of 5 months. SPSS 29 was used for data processing. The results were presented in simple tables and contingency tables. Among the main results, 66.30% were older than 65 years, 58.50% were women, 52.60% were married, 49% had secondary education, and 71.5% had no current occupation, 29.27% were patients with type II diabetes mellitus and 54.92% had arterial hypertension. Statistical significance (p<0.05) was found in age older than 65 years, women, single, middle school level, no current occupation, and with a diagnosis of type II diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension older than 6 months. The prevalence of depression was 69.90% in diabetic patients and 51.90% in hypertensive patients.
