The water network in Cuenca has been significantly impacted by the city’s rapid urban growth in recent years. This study proposes intervention guidelines aimed at mitigating these negative effects, using the El Salado stream as a case study. The goal is for these guidelines to be applicable to other water bodies in various parts of Cuenca. Through the analysis of historical records and the assessment of the current state of the stream, the main alterations to this water body were identified. Findings reveal that as cities expand, urbanization encroaches on vital natural areas, such as riverbanks and streams, diminishing their capacity to fulfill their ecological function. The reduction of protection areas, channelization, and the culverting of sections of the El Salado stream have been documented, altering its natural course and increasing the risks of flooding and landslides. The aim is to transform urban water bodies into green corridors that improve the city’s air and water quality, diversify local flora and fauna, and provide recreational and leisure spaces for the population. These interventions also seek to enhance the resilience of urban areas to mitigate the effects of climate change.
