    La totora (Schoenoplectus californicus) como alternativa sostenible en la producción de materiales de construcción: evaluación y potencialidades

    The present research arises from the need to look for sustainable construction alternatives to be applied in the field of architecture. Considering the great environmental impact of this industry with respect to the production of CO2 and the depletion of natural resources, this study focuses on the behavior of cattail (Schoenoplectus Californicus sp) as sustainable construction material. The methodology adopted for this study is exploratory with a quantitative approach. The research process begins with a bibliographic review of the potential of the specie, focusing on its properties as a phytodepurative plant and its usefulness in the field of construction. On the other hand, the applications as a raw material in the field of construction are reviewed. Likewise, the growth and geographical distribution in the country, its taxonomy, anatomical, physical and mechanical properties are also revised. Additionally, it is proposed to make prototypes with the use of PVA and a press pressure of 0,3kg/cm², to be subsequently tested. The tests performed are thermal conductivity, compression, environmental humidity absorption and density, followed by an analysis and interpretation of the results. Conductivity and density are defined as the most outstanding properties with average values of 0,0675W/mk and 0,316g/cm³ respectively. In addition, recommendations on the utilities and benefits of cattail properties in the prototypical design of sustainable construction materials are included, answering the research question proposed.
