    Estudio comparativo de la maniobra de credé con gentamicina y yodo-povidona en neonatos nacidos en el Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso Cuenca Ecuador 2001

    The newborn is exposed to acquire an eye infection after passage through the birth canal. The purpose of this work is to identify the best prophylaxis. Gentamicin topical ocular compare traditional use in our environment from iodine-Povina in solution at 5 percent. We studied 80 mothers and their children, taking samples of the conjunctiva and vaginal secretions respectively, all births were attended in the obstetrics ward of the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital. Samples were Giemsa stained and alGram and plated on various culture media enriched, selective and differential oriented isolation of bacteria. Contamination was demonstrated in 55 percent of children, mostly due to Gram-positive Staphylococcus bacteria and fewer Gram-negative [E. Coli]. It was concluded that the povidone-iodine is more effective against gentamicin. Only one [2.5 per cent] of children who received povidone iodine presented microorganisms in the conjunctiva 24 hours after birth, compared to [10 percent] of the group receiving the ophthalmic gentamicin. Its effectiveness, easy access and low cost make povidone-iodine 5 percent in an option we recommend
