(Universidad de Cuenca, 2024-06-26) Cedeño Domínguez, Isabella Amandina; Naula Ochoa, Erick Fabricio; Morocho Malla, Manuel Ismael
Background: Stressful situations can cause or exacerbate mental health problems, often anxiety or depression, which require medical attention. Depression is a common mental disorder globally, with approximately 280 million people suffering from depression, and as a consequence, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the age group of 15 to 29 years. It is estimated that 4% of the world's population currently suffers from an anxiety disorder. There is no updated information on mental health in nursing interns in Cuenca, Ecuador. Objective: To determine the frequency of depression, anxiety, and stress in nursing interns at the University of Cuenca during the period May 2023 to April 2024. Methodology: An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted based on survey records on the frequency of anxiety, depression, and stress in nursing interns at the University of Cuenca during the period May 2023 to April 2024. A total of 72 participants were included, the data were entered into a data matrix in Microsoft Excel and subsequently presented in tables. Results: 72 nursing interns participated, mostly women aged 21 to 27 years, with the most common group being singles. The frequency of depression was 50 cases, anxiety was 8 cases, and stress was 8 cases. Conclusion: The majority of nursing interns present mental disorders at different levels, which is similar to other studies on an international scale.
