This research proposes to present a qualitative analysis of the social and religious components that currently characterize El Pase del Niño Viajero in Cuenca, in order to understand the relationship between its expression as a popular religiosity and institutionalization. For this purpose, a simple holistic case study design was used as methodological design, with the application of information collection techniques, which are: secondary documents, semi-structured interviews carried out with direct and indirect participants, and non-participating observation of the phenomenon. The results show, in general terms, the transition process that El Pase del Niño Viajero is currently going through, from a manifestation of popular religiosity towards a greater institutionality, directed by the Catholic Church; in addition, a question is obtained regarding a possible process of "turistization" that affects its dynamics as a religious manifestation at present. This aims to conclude that a manifestation that began with popular religiosity characteristics as a subsystem, is now a mixed manifestation between the popular and the institutional, that responds to the official religion as a system. Even so, as an open manifestation in the public space, it is not exempt from multiple meanings through the incorporation of new participants who may come to debate with the institutional sense.
