(2012) Encalada Guerrero, Verónica Paola; Jerves Serrano, Teodoro Edmundo; Pesántez Pacheco, Laura Andrea; Solíz Carrión, Ana Denise; Mosquera Barzallo, Carlos Edmundo
Background: The karyotype in lymphocytes of peripheral blood is one of the more used cytogenetics techniques in the south of our country, being as is a simple and accessible procedure. This method consists in ordering the chromosomes observed in the microscope based on their features. Even though this is a simple technique in our country there aren’t guidelines with the specific indications to carry out the karyotype, contributing to an inadequate use. Objective: Determining the characteristics of the karyotype utilization in the Center of Diagnosis and Biomedical Studies of the Medical Sciences Faculty of the Cuenca University during the period January 2002 and December 2011. Methodology: The research was descriptive and retrospective. The data was obtained through a survey, after that a dataset was elaborated. The karyotypes only for teaching or observations with more than 3 missed data in the book of register were excluded. Results & conclusions: The overuse of karyotype was 11.80% which determined 732 days of work wasted with economic losses of 3 600 dollars during 10 years. Among the factors associated with overuse we found the specialty of the person who solicited the exam and the year of solicitude (p< 0.05).

We conducted a descriptive study on 375 students. The sample was selected randomly by taking a proportion in relation to the universe. To collect the information we have used a form made based on the variables age, menstrual period, interval, duration of the period, daily volume of bleeding, which according to previous studies are precipitating factors of this disease, a blood sample for determining erythrocyte count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, HhCM, serum iron and iron binding capacity.- The sample included students from a private school in an urban area with a lower socio-economic medium-high, easy access to health services and an institution that requires health checks at the beginning of each school year, these could be the factors that determine the variability of our results.-Results: The prevalence of anemia was 2.4%, the highest percentages are between 15 and 17 years of age, between the ages of the study variables in both the history and in the laboratory data showed a higher frequency of abnormalities.- Serum iron values are low at 100% of students who have anemia, the binding capacity is normal in 88.89% and transferrin saturation index low at 77.78%.- Conclusions: The findings of our study indicate a low prevalence of iron deficiency anemia, we found the same whether it is influenced by the parameters analyzed in our study, and we believe in those variables not find any connection further research should be modifying the conditions there of.

To collect the information, we used a questionnaire based on the characteristics of the menstrual periods (duration, quantity, frequency). Also we took a blood sample for analysis of recount erythrocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCHb; in students with hemoglobin values lower 12g/dL determining serum iron concentration and iron binding capacity. Prior to performing theses procedures were obtained consents and informed assent.- Results: the average age is 15,67year (±1,40), 97,33% and menstrual cycles started; which last 21 – 35 days in 65,75%; the average of the bleeding and volume is 5,15 days (±0,53) and 60,34cc (±11,66) respectively. The average of recount erythrocyte is 5 millions, hemoglobin 13,75g/dL (±0,49), hematocrit 42,75% (±2,57), MCV 89,87fl (±1,16), MCHb 29,51pg (±0,41). The frequency of anemia is 2,67% (10 students), of this group 60% volume of menstrual bleeding more than 80cc, serum iron values is less than 60ug/dL in 90%; and 30% with values of iron binding capacity on 400ug/dl.- Conclude: the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia is low in relation to data from others similar studies. The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia increases with the volume of menstrual bleeding. In students with low hemoglobin values present figures low serum iron concentration, confirming the iron deficiency anemia.

Objectives: To determine the frequency of Ferropénica Anemia in students of the feminine sex of the school Herlinda Toral of the city of River basin, enters the ages between the 12 18 years of age. Methods and materials: A study was realized epidemiologist of prevalence of descriptive and cross-sectional type, for the selection of the sample I am used the program at random Epi Info, Epidat, obtaining itself like result 375 students. They were evaluated: age, menstruation, menstrual cycle, days of bleeding, volume of bleeding, red corpuscles, Hematocrit, corpuscular Volume half, corpuscular Hemoglobina average. In order to define the cases of ferropénica anemia the values of hemoglobina were used, sérico Iron, transferrina. Also it was examined the association of these variables between age groups and menstruation. Results: The prevalence of ferropénica anemia is of 4.8% was a greater prevalence in students of ages of 14 to 17 years (77.7%). In addition an association between all the anemic that already has initiated their menstruation, of which was demonstrated a 50% have menstrual short cycles, a 22.22% a period of bleeding of more than 7 days, a 72.22% present/display a volume of high daily bleeding. Were 18 students with low values of hemoglobina (<12 g/ml) and sérico iron (<60ug/dl.); in the other enumerated parameters they were normal, demonstrating so not always the microcitosis and ferropenia are indicative of ferropénica anemia. Conclusions: The prevalences of ferropénica anemia and iron deficiency found in the studied population were low, being observed a direct relation with the alterations of the menstruation, by a volume of high daily bleeding, increase in the days of bleeding, or major frequency in presentation, increasing the risk of anemia in the women from menarquia.
